Here's what happened in the finale of Season 4 of the Netflix hit series.

The final episodes of Bridgerton's fourth season aired on February 26th, presenting viewers with several important twists and new mysteries.

Benedict and Sophie's love story culminated in a happy marriage, Penelope bid farewell to her career as Lady Whistledown, but her gossip column lives on with a new, mysterious author.

Why Did Queen Charlotte Approve of the Marriage Between Benedict and Sophie?

Throughout the fourth season, Benedict and Sophie faced their main obstacle: social inequality. Sophie was a servant and the illegitimate daughter of an earl, so marrying her would have resulted in the Bridgertons' exile from high society.

In the finale, Violet concocted a cover story and announced to Queen Charlotte that Sophie was actually the daughter of the earl's cousin. The queen, well aware of the truth, pretended to believe it. She knew this was the only way the couple could avoid scandal.

The queen's approval was not so much an acknowledgment of Sophie's aristocratic origins as it was tacit consent to the marriage. After all, not even a queen is omnipotent before the laws of the world, but she can help circumvent them.

Who Is the New Lady Whistledown & Why Did Penelope Leave Her Gossip Column?

In Season 4, Penelope ended her career as Lady Whistledown. After being exposed in Season 3, her work was no longer anonymous and therefore ineffective.

Penelope had to personally deliver the latest gossip to the Queen. Those who feared being featured in the column avoided her, and some tried to influence its content. Penelope realized that she no longer needed a pseudonym to express her opinions – she started writing a novel.

However, the column didn't end. A new installment of Lady Whistledown appeared in the finale, leaving viewers to guess who is behind the pseudonym.

The main suspects are Cressida, who has returned to London as a married woman and had previously tried to impersonate Whistledown in Season 3 with disastrous results, and Hyacinth, the youngest Bridgerton, who has always been interested in social life.

How Did John Stirling Die?

The tragedy of Season 4 was the death of John Stirling, Francesca's husband. He complained of a headache, went to bed, and never woke up.

The cause of death was not revealed in the series, but Julia Quinn, the author of the book series, confirmed that John died of a brain aneurysm, a condition that was unheard of in the 19th century.

Francesca was supported by John's cousin, Michaela, during this difficult time, but then Michaela left London.

Who Will Seasons 5 and 6 of 'Bridgerton' Be About?

Netflix has already renewed Bridgerton for Seasons 5 and 6. Showrunner Jess Brownell confirmed that the focus will be on Eloise and Francesca.

In Season 5, Eloise will have her own love story based on the novel To Sir Phillip, With Love, in which she must choose between marrying the respected Sir Phillip and remaining a spinster.

Francesca, who is grieving the loss of her husband, is the subject of the novel When He Was Wicked. Eloise will likely be the first to be picked – in Season 4, she announced her intention to become a spinster but admitted that marriage isn't so bad.
