‘Call the Midwife’ Finally Gets a Movie: Here’s All We Know About It

The details of the Call the Midwife movie have fans excited for good reason! While not much is known about it, recent news hints at something amazing coming our way!
After years of speculation, the beloved BBC series Call the Midwife is officially expanding its universe: this time, to the big screen. It was announced just as filming for season 15 has begun. A feature film will bring the cherished characters of Nonnatus House into a new era and setting.
Executive producer Dame Pippa Harris DBE, as announced by Neal Street, said that the decision to expand the Call the Midwife franchise was influenced by its popularity in the current media landscape.
"Emboldened by this warmth and enthusiasm, now feels like the right time to expand our world and take our nuns and midwives onto the big screen with our movie, and back in time with the prequel!” she added.
What Will ‘Call the Midwife’ Movie Be About?
Although not many details are known yet, Eva Yates, the director of BBC Film, noted that Call the Midwife is perfect for exploring female experiences and issues throughout history. It’s time for the beloved characters to be shown on the big screen.
The characters involved include members of the current cast in an overseas setting. The film will be written by show creator Heidi Thomas and produced by Harris and Ann Tricklebank. And like the show, the Call the Midwife movie promises to tackle controversial topics.
The narrative is expected to follow the senior members of Nonnatus House as they embark on a mercy mission abroad. Season 15 of Call the Midwife will air in 2026 and will feature a two-part Christmas special set in Hong Kong and London. This suggests that the movie may also be set there and follow the events.
Additionally, a prequel series set during World War II is in development. It will offer fans a deeper exploration of the origins of Nonnatus House and its characters.
