Can Streaming Save 'Thunderbolts'? Marvel’s 'Underdog' Hit Finally Has a Release Date

For those who missed it in theatres, grab your popcorn now.
It didn’t quite conquer the box office — but could streaming turn Thunderbolts, aka The New Avengers, into Marvel’s next cult hit?
Despite a star-studded ensemble and Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes (88% from critics, 93% from audiences), Thunderbolts pulled in $380 million globally — a solid but not superheroic total, falling just behind Captain America: Brave New World. Still, as is often the case in the MCU, the real legacy might begin not in cinemas, but at home.
Marvel Studios has now confirmed that Thunderbolts, now retitled The New Avengers, will be available for digital purchase or rental starting July 1, with a Blu-ray release slated for July 29. A Disney+ streaming debut hasn’t been dated yet, but insiders expect it to arrive later this year — and it might just be the platform where this unconventional team of antiheroes finds its fiercest following.
With Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and David Harbour leading a rebellious pack of misfits, and Jake Schreier’s direction earning him Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot, Thunderbolts is far from done making noise.

The film follows Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker as they’re forced into a deadly mission orchestrated by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Haunted by their pasts and driven by conflicting loyalties, they must either destroy each other — or find a path to redemption.
