2013's Snowpiercer is one of the best post-apocalyptic movies ever made, but it will soon be leaving Netflix's lineup.

Summary:

  • All too many post-apocalyptic movies rely on familiar tropes of nuclear catastrophes or deadly infections
  • With its unusual climate change-based approach, Snowpiercer still feels incredibly fresh and deserves your attention
  • Unfortunately, it will no longer be available on Netflix by the end of the month, so you might want to hurry

The post-apocalyptic genre is incredibly diverse, blending with countless other genres, from heartbreaking drama and chilling horror to light-hearted comedy and even romance, to ultimately deliver something new.

However, the setting also plays a huge role, as an unusual cause for a world-ending event can add a whole new flavor to the story and instantly set it apart from many other installments in the genre.

Unfortunately, most of the time filmmakers tend to rely on familiar tropes of nuclear wars or outbreaks of deadly infections, which can start to feel a bit repetitive, especially if you are a fan of the genre.

Snowpiercer Is One Of The Best Entries In The Genre

But 2013's Snowpiercer, directed by renowned South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, also known for directing Parasite and Memories of Murder, and based on the French graphic novel of the same name, took a different approach based on climate fiction.

Set in a world engulfed in ice and snow after an ecological disaster accidentally started a new ice age instead of stopping global warming, the movie revolves around the remnants of humanity living in a constantly moving train.

Unfortunately, the scarcity of resources has caused a massive divide in the post-apocalyptic society, as those who can afford to live in the front cars bathe in luxury, while the less fortunate inhabitants of the train's back end struggle to survive day to day.

Such a state of affairs is a disaster waiting to happen, so the story focuses on the violent uprising that has been long in coming since the poor passengers got tired of being treated like subhumans.

You Only Have a Month to Watch Snowpiercer on Netflix

With an all-star cast that includes Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, John Hurt and many others, combined with an effective story and action, Snowpiercer is a non-stop thrill ride that is definitely worth your time.

The movie is currently available for streaming on Netflix, but it will be removed from the service's lineup of projects on February 28, 2024, so you might want to hurry before it is too late.

You can also check out the TV series of the same name, which offers a different, slower and more detailed take on the same story and is available on Prime Video.
