The actress should have thought twice before joining this project.

A large percentage of films starring Cate Blanchett exceed the 50% mark on Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, she's had her share of controversial and even provocative works, such as Ocean's 8 and Where'd You Go, Bernadette.

Many know that Blanchett is quite responsible when it comes to choosing projects – she always approaches each new script extremely meticulously and never refuses to give the director a few pieces of advice.

Her titanic acting talent allows her to take absolutely any movie, even the weakest, to a new level. Well, that was the case until 2024.

The nominees for the Golden Raspberry, the most important anti-cinema award, were recently announced. And one of the contenders in the Worst Actress category was Cate Blanchett for the movie Borderlands, which received a disheartening 10% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Even an experienced and talented actress like Cate Blanchett could not save this flick from complete failure.

Borderlands went through grueling reshoots, and original director Craig Mazin asked to have his name removed from the credits and left to make The Last of Us with HBO.

The Actress Explained Why She Decided to Star in the Adaptation

If you're surprised that Blanchett agreed to star in the blockbuster adaptation of the game at all, the actress explained her decision in an interview with Empire:

“I think there also may have been a little Covid madness.”

Oddly enough, Cate Blanchett is one of the few stars who really enjoyed this crazy party. The actress played the rare dramatic episodes with zeal and devotion.

Borderlands Became One of the Worst Game Adaptations in Recent Years

Unfortunately, even the two-time Oscar winner is powerless against the studio's laziness – in the finale, the famous actress was replaced by a poorly made 3D computer model, the creators gave her wings and made her destroy enemies.

And all of this happened in a movie with a budget of $120 million. It looks so sad that you can't help but wonder: what if the video game adaptation trend was really a mistake?

Maybe Hollywood shouldn't have taken away the job from loyal fans who make movies about their favorite games, but at least they're not wasting hundreds of millions of dollars and they're not ruining the filmographies of our favorite stars.
