‘Only Murders in the Building’ Creator Teases Season 5: “A Whole New and Old World at the Same Time”

Only Murders in the Building’s Arconia building is once again becoming the crime scene in the show’s fifth season released this fall, but there will still be something else that fans never quite saw coming.

Launched back in 2021, Only Murders in the Building has been following the trio of amateur detectives Charles, Oliver and Mabel as they investigate mysterious occurrences happening within the same New York building.

This time, however, things will likely not be limited to Arconia only, as Only Murders in the Building’s co-creator John Hoffman promises something on a bigger scale.

John Hoffman Says ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5 Is “Something We Haven’t Done Before”

After the show’s season 4 broke the main rule by taking its leading characters to Los Angeles, it seems like Only Murders in the Building is gradually shifting to murders happening not only in the building.

Even though the upcoming fifth season will see the trio investigating the mysterious death of Arconia’s doorman Lester, the series’ co-creator John Hoffman says the actual global agenda will somehow get into the storyline.

“I hope people love season five as much as I do. I think we’re doing something we haven’t done before in season five that pertains to New York today, right now in the headlines, in both New York and the world at large in certain ways”, Hoffman told The Hollywood Reporter recently ahead of Only Murders in the Building’s season 5 release in September.

However, he still stressed that it doesn’t mean that the show is changing its course, with the initial narrative staying exactly the same as before.

“But it’s all about our show — classic meets modern, old versus new, and putting those things together. And there’s a whole new and old world at the same time, very specific to New York and our building”, the showrunner added.

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Fans Already Have a Wild Theory About Lester’s Death

Since the fourth season’s finale saw the rest of the characters discovering Lester’s body right near the place of the wedding reception at the fountain in Arconia, fans were quick to grasp that there was something suspicious about the whole thing — particularly, because Lester couldn’t be killed like this in broad daylight.

“My only reasonable theory is that, just like with Sazz, he was killed elsewhere and then moved there not long before the trio found him”, Redditor Mannersmakethman2 wrote in a thread.

They then continued by suggesting that Only Murders in the Building’s next season might even borrow another mystery crime drama movie’s storyline taken from Agatha Christie’s novel.

“It’s just like in Murder On The Orient Express and everyone living in the Arconia (except Charles, Oliver and Mabel) is in on it and they are all aware of the body in the fountain, but for obvious reasons chose to not tell anyone about it”, the user added.

Only Murders in the Building’s season 5 is arriving on Hulu on September 9.
