Catherine O'Hara's Character Divides The Last of Us Fans

The Last of Us Season 2 introduced a new character. Catherine O'Hara reveals how many episodes she'll be in.
The Last of Us continues to prove why it's one of the most popular TV shows of all time with its brand new Season 2. However, even the most successful shows occasionally take creative risks that subsequently divide the fanbase. The Last of Us is no exception.
This time, fans are debating whether Catherine O'Hara's character was a necessary addition to the show or not.
The Last of Us Universe Is Expanding With Catherine O’Hara’s New Character
Season 2 introduced us to Gail Lynden played by Catherine O'Hara. Gail lives in Jackson and is the only therapist there (as we find out in Episode 3). Gail was never present in video games and is an entirely new character for The Last of Us universe.
While some fans see this addition as another brilliant way to build the world, others think it’s an unnecessary change from the game's storytelling approach.
“This storyline is obviously a complete departure from the game but it is an attempt for the audience to internalize more of Joel’s inner struggle in dealing with the truth and his actions. Overall very impressed in the casting and acting from Catherine O’Hara,” Redditor BurnedStoneBonspiel wrote.
But there is an opposite opinion.
“I really hate some of the narrative mechanisms in the show. They created a therapist character just so they could tell the audience how to interpret events, and I just hate that philosophy of story telling,” Redditor giantdancer shared.
Catherine O’Hara Talks About Working With Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey
For those concerned about how much this new character might alter the original story, O'Hara herself provided some insight in an interview with Premiere. She revealed:
“In The Last of Us, all I can say is that my character will appear in three episodes. I'll meet Joel and Ellie.”
She also talked about working with Pascal and Ramsey, saying:
“My first day on set was 100% with Pedro, which was wonderful, and my second day was the same, but with Bella. The fact that I started with them immediately immersed me in the series.”
