Celine Song to Reboot 90s Favorite 'My Best Friend’s Wedding' — What Does This Mean for the Sequel?
Materialists director gives a modern edge to nostalgia.
Not long ago, I came across another wave of 90s film revivals — and among them was My Best Friend’s Wedding.
These days, I’m mostly unimpressed by remakes — they rarely bring anything fresh to the table. But this time, something stood out: Celine Song, director of Materialists and Past Lives, is writing the sequel. Adds a twist to it, doesn’t it?
Sony is officially developing the project. According to Dermot Mulroney, the studio has already reached out to the original cast’s representatives to discuss availability and salaries.
For now, Song is attached as the screenwriter. But given her rising profile and clear creative voice, it wouldn’t be surprising if she ends up directing as well.
The original 1997 film starred Julia Roberts as Julianne — a woman who tries to sabotage her best friend’s wedding after realising she's in love with him. It became a defining rom-com of its era.
Directed by P. J. Hogan and written by Ronald Bass (Rain Man), the original team won’t return. Both have been largely inactive in recent years, and the sequel is expected to reflect a different — perhaps more modern — perspective.
Song has previously spoken about how the rom-com genre was "taken down by misogyny" after the 90s. Her involvement suggests this sequel could question old formulas instead of repeating them.
Interestingly, Julia Roberts said in 2023 that if she could revisit any of her past roles, it would be Julianne from My Best Friend’s Wedding. The timing now seems perfect.
