Kai Tanaka-Reed seems to hit a lot of nerves.

The Chicago Med fanbase can be hard to please, especially when it comes to newcomers to the beloved series. But Devin Kawaoka's Kai Tanaka-Reed may have set a record for the speed with which fans started to hate him.

With his far-from-admirable behavior, the new doctor at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center is a good example of how to drive viewers away.

Just joining the hit NBC medical series in its current 8th season, Tanaka-Reed quickly established himself as a problematic figure.

Cheekily bragging about his unproven medical skills, he attempted to overstep his authority in a highly critical case. When a patient arrived in the ER with severe gunshot wounds, Dr. Crockett Marcel took the lead on the operation.

But Kai, despite his limited training, forced his way into the operating room and took control of the situation, ignoring the attending's orders to stand down.

His incompetence nearly cost the patient his life, and it was only Marcel's intervention that saved the day.

When the patient later expressed gratitude to Marcel, Kai felt snubbed and went on to file a complaint with HR, accusing the senior doctor of disrespecting him.

Given this questionable behavior, Chicago Med fans were understandably annoyed with the character's introduction to the show. And they didn't skip a beat taking to social media to vent their irritation.

"I wanted Crockett to smack that Kai Tanaka-Reed guy," one of the fans wrote on the show's Subreddit to the agreement of all commenters.

Fans feel that Tanaka-Reed, with his cocky and overconfident attitude, could be a real threat to the hospital. He seems to have no respect for his superiors, and nearly killing a patient apparently hasn't taught him much.

He will undoubtedly continue to be insubordinate and annoying, which may lead to other critical situations. Fans believe that Kai should have been reported and fired for the case described above alone.

"I feel like that guy is a walking lawsuit waiting to happen," a fan wrote. "If I were Crockett tbh, I would've gotten his medical license nixed and screwed his career so hard they wouldn't even let him operate on a chicken breast."

All of this makes fans think that the character will not last long on the show. At least, they hope so.
