Chicago? Nope, This Crime Musical With Near-Perfect RT Score Is Much Better

Good news is that this musical is for everyone: both fans of musicals and those who are far from the genre. But even better news? You can watch it for free right now!
Growing up, I always thought musicals were all about flashy costumes and Broadway-style dance numbers. The jazz hands and high kicks that Chicago made famous.
Well, turns out it cannot be further from the truth.
There are a lot of musicals that break the golden rules and reimagine what a genre can actually be. And the movie we're going to talk about today is no exception. It does an absolutely amazing job of breathing new life into this old genre.
Sound of Noise (2010): Anarchy Meets Symphony
Unlike traditional musicals that often take us to fantasy worlds, Sound of Noise finds extraordinary music in ordinary objects and transforms the everyday into art.
Released in 2010, Sound of Noise centers around Amadeus Warnebring, a tone-deaf police officer born into a family of famous musicians. If his life wasn't difficult enough already, there are 6 anarchists running around the city to play their music in the most casual and, at the same time, unconventional places you can imagine.
The Swedish film absolutely delivers with its absurdist humor, suspense, and musical innovation, but it’s not the only thing that’s good about the movie.
Sound of Noise Values Originality
In an interview with Flixist, Ola Simonsson, one of the directors of the musical, spoke about people appreciating the originality. He said:
“We’ve been travelling a lot with the film, to festivals and some of the territories that have launched it, and it’s very satisfying to see it fill that need for something different. It’s something that you can relate to and recognize and feel secure with and laugh at and you have fun with it, but still it doesn’t really look like anything else.”
And oh boy, did he get it right! I know we're all tired of the same recycled stories we've seen times and times again.
Despite all of this, Sound of Noise has somehow flown under the radar. But trust me, its clever ideas are matched by impeccable execution. It has sequences that will have you simultaneously laughing and applauding the creativity on the screen.
As Redditor SvenSvenkill3 noted:
“The movie manages to be clever, engaging, charming, slightly quirky and at times very funny, and yet never annoying and/or smug.”
So if you are ready to experience a different type of musical, it’s your lucky day. Sound of Noise is currently available to stream for free on multiple platforms including Hoopla, Canopy, and Plex.
