Although national fantasy began to appear in the middle of the last century, it has only recently become truly popular. Projects inspired by the mythology of the Aztecs and Incas, India and the Middle East are emerging every year.

Among all this diversity, Chinese high fantasy – xianxia – stands out. It does not fit into any kind of framework, goes its own way, and is winning the hearts of people all over the world.

Legend of Fuyao Is One of the Most Popular Chinese Series

One of the brightest representatives of this genre is undoubtedly Legend of Fuyao, which was watched on YouTube more than one million times within 48 hours of its premiere in 2018.

And in 2022 the number of views of this series reached 10 billion on one of the largest Chinese platforms WeTV.

What is Legend of Fuyao About?

The events take place in the lands of five states. The girl Fuyao was born from a beautiful lotus petal. She was constantly mocked for her lack of martial arts skill... that is until she discovered an unbeatable technique when she was sixteen years old.

Fuyao sets out on a voyage throughout all kingdoms to retrieve the five secret talismans, during which she meets and falls in love with Zhangsun, the crown prince.

The girl eventually gets entangled in the power struggles and political games going on in the palace.

Legend of Fuyao Is Similar to The Goblet of Fire

Despite the fact that Legend of Fuyao is pure Chinese fantasy, it is often compared to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and some fans of the Boy Who Lived franchise have even accused the Chinese series of plagiarism.

The thing is, Fuyao studied at the Taoist School, where students honed their martial arts and sorcery skills.

Once every eight years, the school holds the Tiandou Competition, which students can join by throwing a piece of paper soaked in their own blood into a bronze cup. And once you are selected for the competition, there is no turning back.

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Just like Harry Potter, Fuyao did not enter the competition of her own free will – someone threw her name into the cup, hoping that the girl would fail the tests and die.

The concept of the tournament is indeed reminiscent of the Goblet of Fire – but the basic principles are the only thing that connects these two projects. The Chinese series goes its own way, telling the story of a strong female heroine who pursues her goal without betraying high moral ideals.
