Christopher Meloni's SVU return: Stabler is back for episode 600, and showrunner swears it's no "gag"
The most famous unresolved relationship on network television gets its milestone moment — and the woman running the show has rules about how.
Elliot Stabler is coming back to the precinct where it all started. Christopher Meloni will reprise his role in the 600th episode of Law & Order: SVU, per Give Me My Remote — and Mariska Hargitay immediately confirmed the worst-kept secret herself, posting set photos with Meloni captioned "Who dat?" and "Happy 600…" It's his first SVU appearance since last September's season 27 premiere, when Stabler met Benson outside a wake and told her, after 26 years of loaded silences, that he loved her. The show then did not address this for an entire season, because of course it didn't.
Fazekas' one rule
Showrunner Michele Fazekas has spent months managing expectations about when and how she'd deploy Meloni, whose home base evaporated when NBC canceled Organized Crime in April after five seasons. Her standard, stated plainly to NBC Insider:
"I don't want it to be a gag or a stunt."
The reunion, she said, has to come from the characters and carry actual weight — a bar worth noting from the writer who was on staff back in seasons 3 through 7, when Benson and Stabler were the partnership. As for the milestone episode itself, Fazekas has been grinning through her teeth for a month:
"All I will share is we are planning it in a big way."
She's also called it potentially the last centennial episode of the whole show, which is the closest a network showrunner gets to saying "no pressure."

What we actually know
- Hargitay is directing episode 600 herself — she says it lands six episodes into the new season. No air date has been announced.
- It won't revisit an old case, per Fazekas, despite fan theories about callbacks to the pilot.
- The near-kiss discourse is canon now: Hargitay has said she and Meloni disagreed with Dick Wolf's call on the season 24 near-kiss and filmed alternate takes that went further.
- Meloni is otherwise occupied, starring in Dan Fogelman's sports drama The Land — which makes every Stabler appearance a scheduling heist.
Season 28 premieres this week on NBC; episode 600 films now and airs when the network decides America has waited exactly long enough.
