If you miss The Penguin, this series is a perfect pick.

The second season of Sugar, the detective series starring Colin Farrell that has already become one of Apple TV's most popular shows, recently concluded. The new chapter continues the story of the private detective whose true nature was revealed in Season 1.

Now that Sugar's secret is out, the writers can play with it, turning his otherworldly nature into a metaphor for loneliness and the desire to belong in a world he doesn't fully understand.

What Is 'Sugar' Season 2 About?

The Season 1 finale left Sugar alone: he rescued Olivia, but stayed on Earth while the other members of his species fled. The new season begins with a "routine" investigation – a young boxer asks Sugar to find his troubled brother, Moon, who disappeared without a trace.

The investigation leads Sugar from the secrets of expensive villas to underground drug trafficking and corruption involving a police officer named Ray Vega – the season's main antagonist, embodying everything Sugar fears becoming.

As usual, the search for one missing person leads Sugar to unpleasant characters and old acquaintances. Sugar desperately wants to assimilate, but the further he goes, the more frightened he becomes of others.

'Sugar' Season 2 Elevates the Noir Aesthetic and Psychological Depth to New Heights

The series creators have returned to the classic noir structure that polished up the first season – Sugar once again takes on a "local" case that gradually reveals the corruption in the City of Angels.

While viewers smiled at nostalgic clips from old films in the first season, they now worry about Sugar's mental state. The Los Angeles that unfolds before him does not match the magical Hollywood atmosphere he craves.

The second season is objectively good as a noir, but its sci-fi nature raises questions. It's as if the creators are holding back the potential so it can really take off in the third season, which will focus on Los Angeles and detective intrigue.

'Sugar' Remains a Unique Project Worth Watching, if Only for Colin Farrell's Sake

Colin Farrell, who rarely reprises roles, delivers an even stronger performance in the second season. Sugar is no longer just a charismatic detective – he is also a vulnerable, internally troubled hero.

Meanwhile, Tony Dalton creates a powerful contrast to the title character as corrupt cop Ray Vega.

Sugar takes too long to get going, likely causing a loss of viewers at the start of the new season. However, the second half is more dynamic and better explores the main theme.

In these times of crisis, Apple TV is taking production risks by supporting expensive genre hybrids that are difficult to sum up in a single sentence. Sugar is a detective story, a film noir, a sci-fi story, and a melancholic exploration of the protagonist's inner world.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Sugar' Season 2?

  • Sugar Season 2 has 97% from critics and 93% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
