Couples Therapy, Crime Solving, and a Talking Snake — Is 'Zootopia 2' Really the Sequel We Expected?

The first trailer is here and full of surprises.
At last! Nearly a decade after the original, Zootopia 2 has dropped its trailer — and yes, it’s full of unexpected twists. As someone who still happily re-watches the first film for its colour, charm and clever message, I’ve been looking forward to this sequel for quite a while.
It’s a joy to see Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde again — even if things between them seem a little… tense. According to the trailer, they’re now in couples therapy. We also get glimpses of familiar faces: the mouse mafia family and Gazelle, voiced once again by Shakira.
The new case they’re drawn into involves a mysterious snake, voiced by Ke Huy Quan. The tone of the trailer feels a bit more grown-up this time. And maybe it’s just me, but that moment with Judy in the yellow dress? Total How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days vibe.
I’m clearly not alone in my curiosity. Here’s what people are saying on Reddit:
"I'm hoping it'll be as good as the first one," shared Southern_Act_5552.
"I like how they're leaning into the absurdity of animals of so many different sizes and straight up types living together," noted Narretz.
"Can't wait for Shakira's new song for this. I loved Try Everything from the first one," wrote Curve-Inspector (same, buddy).
"That... seems WAY more adult-oriented than the original. Like, adult movie with some jokes for kids, not kids movie with some jokes for adults," observed ElevatedPermissions.
That last comment really struck me — the sequel does feel more adult, in tone and humour. Whether that’s a bold move or a risk, we’ll see. One thing to note: the original directors aren’t back. This time, Jared Bush — co-writer of the first film — is taking the lead as both writer and director. Always a bit of a gamble, isn’t it?
