A rich, bubbly, and incredibly satisfying family side dish that turns a few basic ingredients into absolute pure comfort food.

If your standard routine of basic mashed or fried potatoes is starting to feel a bit too familiar, this decadent baked dish is the ultimate way to surprise everyone at the dinner table.

Thinly sliced potatoes are layered with crispy bacon and fragrant garlic, then slowly simmered in a rich cream sauce until they are completely melt-in-your-mouth tender. Topped with a generous layer of gooey, stretched mozzarella that bakes into a beautiful golden crust, it is a hearty and deeply comforting centerpiece that easily steals the show at any family gathering.

Here’s what you need: 1.7 lbs of potatoes, 3 oz of bacon, 4 oz of shredded mozzarella cheese, 1 cup of heavy cream, 3 garlic cloves, 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon of potato seasoning blend, salt to taste, and fresh herbs for serving.

To start, slice your peeled potatoes into very thin, uniform rounds so they cook evenly at the exact same speed. Finely mince your garlic cloves (or run them through a press) and chop your bacon into small, bite-sized strips.

Grab your favorite baking dish and pour a tiny splash of the heavy cream across the bottom, scattering a portion of the minced garlic over it. Begin building the dish by laying down a neat layer of potato slices, followed by a handful of the chopped bacon strips. Sprinkle a pinch of smoked paprika, potato seasoning, and a light touch of salt evenly over the layer, and continue repeating this exact pattern until all your ingredients are beautifully layered in the dish.

Pour the remaining heavy cream evenly over the top, cover the entire dish tightly with a sheet of aluminum foil, and pop it into a preheated oven at 350°F for about 40 to 45 minutes until the potatoes are tender.

Carefully pull off the foil, smother the top of the dish with your shredded mozzarella cheese, and return it to the oven uncovered for another 7 to 10 minutes. Watch for the cheese to become completely melted, bubbling, and lightly golden brown. Scatter a handful of fresh chopped herbs over the top right before serving, and enjoy it hot.
