However, Benedict and Olivia’s chemistry is undeniable, lighting up every scene.

I’ve been checking out the trailer for Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman’s The Roses, and I have to say, it looks both sharp and chaotic — exactly what I’d expect from a dark comedy about a marriage falling apart.

From what the trailer shows, the film leans into biting humor, tense confrontations, and some seriously theatrical over-the-top moments. I can already tell that Cumberbatch and Colman’s performances are going to be the highlight.

Critics on Rotten Tomatoes who’ve seen early screenings are divided. Robert Kojder notes that while the third act delivers laughs with its sharp humor, the film overall is a "disappointing modern update."

George M. Thomas says it "lacks a sense of playfulness and struggles to redeem its characters" while Alistair Harkness of the Scotsman adds, "The film lacks the necessary playfulness to balance its toxic themes, making it difficult to see how it finds the redemption of its characters."

Still, based on the trailer alone, I’m genuinely curious to see these two powerhouse actors tackle such a dark, twisted story. The Roses hits theaters this December, so there’s still time to brace yourself for its mix of chaos, comedy, and drama. For me, even if the story doesn’t fully land, watching Cumberbatch and Colman go at it will likely be worth the ticket.
