Sean S. Cunningham's film needed Jason dead. Part 2 needed him alive. Forty-six years later, a TV show finally explains how both can be true.

Friday the 13th has been carrying a continuity error as a load-bearing wall since 1981: the original film's entire plot requires Jason Voorhees to have drowned in 1957, and every sequel requires him to have survived it, with no explanation ever offered. Crystal Lake's eight-episode season, which finished rolling out on Peacock on October 15, closes with "The Final Chapter" — a finale that makes the contradiction the whole point.

The answer is Project Argonaut. The penultimate episode rewinds to the 1950s and reveals that Bellflower Chemical — run by Elias Wittering (Hamish Linklater), Jason's biological father — experimented on Pamela during her pregnancy and on Jason after it. The program left the boy deformed, fragile-looking and, crucially, almost impossible to kill, while Pamela (Linda Cardellini) was dosed with psychiatric medication and recast as an unfit mother so the company could keep its test subject. She eventually broke Jason out of the facility herself, stabbing a doctor in the face on the way, and ran to the town of Crystal Lake to hide him.

"There's a lot more story to be told."

— Brad Caleb Kane, showrunner, to Gold Derby, on ending with both Voorhees alive before 1980

What actually happens in the finale

  • Elias dies. He tracks Pamela down, tries to lure his son home, and the adult, enormous Jason — sack over his head — crushes his father's skull, a kill staged as a direct echo of 1982's Friday the 13th Part 3.
  • Jason nearly kills Pamela too, grabbing her by the throat before memories of her kindness stop him. Ralph shoots him in the head; Jason falls, then vanishes into the woods.
  • Pamela survives — and laughs, declaring the woods belong to her and her son. Chief Levon Brooks (William Catlett) is shot in the Bellflower raid and left with his fate unresolved.
  • The lore grenade: the 1958 murders of counselors Barry and Claudette — the killings the 1980 film pins on Pamela — were committed by Jason's friend Grace in a drug-induced mania. Pamela covered for her.

That last bullet is the season's most radioactive change, because it means the body count that defines Pamela Voorhees in the movie didn't start with Pamela at all.

Don't miss: Crystal Lake rewrites why Jason is deformed — and the showrunner is already defending the new origin to Friday the 13th fans

The franchise spent 45 years insisting Pamela killed first and Jason rose later. The prequel's answer: wrong on both counts.

Kane told Gold Derby he deliberately parked the ending where no retconning is needed — Jason alive and hidden, Pamela radicalized but not yet the machete-wielding cook of 1980, eight years still to burn. Peacock hasn't ordered season 2. The finale behaves like a show that expects one.
