Crystal Lake release date and cast: the Friday the 13th prequel makes Jason a recurring role — and Shailene Woodley isn't in it at all
After years of rights hell, Jason's franchise finally returns October 15 — and the strangest thing about the cast list is the famous name the internet keeps adding to it.
Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th prequel series from A24 and Peacock, premieres October 15 with all eight episodes at once — the franchise's first new on-screen anything in 17 years, built at a reported $10 million per episode and shot partly at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in New Jersey, the actual camp from the 1980 film.
The structural swing: this is Pamela's show. Linda Cardellini stars as Pam Voorhees, the grieving mother who was the original movie's twist killer, while young Jason — played by Callum Vinson — is a recurring guest role. The hockey mask's future owner is a supporting player in his own mythology, which showrunner Brad Caleb Kane says is exactly the point. His pitch, via Peacock:
"It's a psychological thriller. It's a paranoid '70s thriller."
With, he allows, all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher — and he's promised "rivers of blood" and that Cardellini's Pamela goes full Friday the 13th before the season's out.

The actual cast
- Linda Cardellini as Pam Voorhees, cast in March 2025
- Callum Vinson as young Jason, recurring
- William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom rounding out the camp
- Adrienne King — Alice from the original 1980 film, the woman who beheaded Pamela — worked on the series, the deepest of deep-cut legacy nods
About Shailene Woodley
Now, the name a startling number of people keep searching alongside this show: Shailene Woodley is not in Crystal Lake. She was never cast, never in talks, never attached — no trade has ever reported her involvement in any role, in either era of the production. The confusion appears to be pure internet sediment: the series spent four messy years in development (original showrunner Bryan Fuller was fired in 2024 when A24 elected to go a different direction), and that long limbo left room for AI-generated "concept trailers" and auto-filled cast pages to staple famous names onto the project. Woodley's actual upcoming slate contains zero hockey masks.

The only Voorhees on the call sheet is Cardellini's. All eight episodes, Peacock, October 15 — with international audiences getting it via Sky and HBO Max.
