Originally, Edgerunners wasn’t intended to continue beyond its first season, but that looks set to change. In late 2024, Netflix released a teaser hinting at more Cyberpunk anime content in development. Furthermore, with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners scheduled for a panel at Anime Expo 2025, the sequel’s arrival seems all but certain. Details remain scarce, but given the series’ acclaim, excitement is well justified.
Why Has Season 2 Taken So Long?
The delay largely comes down to Studio Trigger, the animation studio behind Edgerunners. Since the first season’s release, they’ve been busy with other projects such as Delicious in Dungeon, Gridman Universe, and the upcoming Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt sequel — directed by Edgerunners’ own Hiroyuki Imaishi. Simply put, the studio hasn’t had the time to focus on a second season.
Additionally, the original series concluded with a bittersweet but definitive ending. CD Projekt Red’s community manager, Satoru Honma, previously confirmed there were no plans for a sequel. This suggests Edgerunners was never designed for continuation, which explains the lengthy wait and recent change in direction.
What Can Fans Expect from Season 2?
If Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 does arrive, it likely won’t continue the original story. Honma has indicated that a new season would tell a completely different tale set within the same universe, acting more as a spiritual successor than a direct sequel. Characters from Season 1 might only make brief appearances.
While this may disappoint fans hoping for more of Lucy or other survivors, it preserves the integrity of the original story’s ending. This approach allows the world of Cyberpunk to expand without undermining what came before. Hopefully, the Anime Expo panel will shed more light on the future of the franchise.
