Dacre Montgomery Clarifies If Billy Will Return in 'Stranger Things' Season 5
Max’s brother had a vital role in Stranger Things, but the newest update from the actor hints we shouldn’t be too hopeful for his return in the final chapter.
The wait for Stranger Things season 5 is pretty excruciating, but some fans find solace in knowing that their favorite characters will soon return. Well, if your favorite character was Billy Hargrove, first-edgy-then-evil step-brother of Max Mayfield, there’s little solace for you.
Dacre Montgomery, who portrayed Billy in the second and third season of Stranger Things, revealed to Screen Rant if he will return for the fifth and final chapter. Not only is there little hope for Billy’s return, the actor himself seems to be much more excited for what the future holds rather than looking back.
“I'm more excited than anything for it to be over for the Duffer Brothers, because I know they have so many other awesome stories that, years ago, they were telling me about. Secondly, I'm not in the last season, unfortunately… Thirdly, Max, I want to digress from your point into going towards Sadie as an actress. [...] I really, more than anything, just want her to see her continue to do so many cool performances outside of Stranger Things, because I just think that she's so talented, so professional, so driven—all those sorts of things,” Montgomery said.
Sadie Sink, who portrays Max in the show, has recently been confirmed to be a part of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, although her role is yet to be revealed. In 2022, she starred in The Whale alongside Brendan Fraser; her most recent work is O’Dessa (2025).
Billy’s death impacted Max a lot, being a huge part of the very reason she became one of Vecna’s victims. He also made a surprise appearance in season 4, where he briefly haunted Max in Vecna’s visions. However, it’s not too surprising to hear Montgomery’s take on his character’s fate in Stranger Things season 5 — it looks like the grand finale has plenty of other storylines to focus on.

The reason: Billy’s arc is completed, even though his season 4 appearance did undermine his almost-heroic sendoff in season 3. For Stranger Things season 5, bringing him back doesn’t make much sense.
Stranger Things season 5 Volume 1 will be released on November 26, 2025, with Volume 2 following on December 25, 2025, and Series Finale on December 31, 2025.
