Disney+ ordered the Darkwing Duck reboot six years after it was announced, and Mark Hamill is playing the duck
A superhero who has spent 35 years in a world that never heard of him is dragged back to work by a teenager who knows everything about him. That is the premise the streamer just greenlit, and it is also, more or less, a description of what happened to the show itself.
Disney+ has ordered the Darkwing Duck reboot to series, with Mark Hamill voicing Drake Mallard and Seth Rogen as Launchpad McQuack. The project was first reported in development almost six years ago, which makes the greenlight the slowest part of the story and the logline the funniest.
Because the premise is this: Darkwing has spent the last 35 years stranded in an alternate world that has never heard of him, until a teenager called Duckie turns up knowing his whole heroic past and drags him back into the job. The original series ended in 1992. The arithmetic is not a coincidence.

Who is in the booth
Hamill's casting is the headline for anyone who followed his second career: he has been a voice actor for as long as he has been Luke Skywalker, and the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series is the role that defined it. Variety lists him by those credits rather than by Star Wars: Batman: The Animated Series and Batman: Arkham Asylum. Rogen produces through Point Grey alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham, which explains the tone the announcement is aiming for.
- Lizzy Caplan voices Gosalyn Mallard, Darkwing's adopted daughter.
- Lilimar plays Duckie, the teenager who starts the plot — a character new to this version.
- Dan Stevens is Glade McTowers, Kathryn Newton is Firecracker, and Nat Faxon and Katie Rich play Officers Webb and Shanks.
- Negaduck and Megavolt return as antagonists, with Morgana back among the allies.
- Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui write and executive produce.
"Disney said 'let's get dangerous' and we said 'hell yeah'," the Point Grey team said, quoting the catchphrase the 1991 show ran on.
What the original actually was
It is remembered as a cult item, and the numbers say otherwise. Darkwing Duck ran three seasons and 91 episodes across 1991 and 1992, airing on The Disney Channel and ABC while also going out in syndication — a volume of animation no streaming revival is going to match. Jim Cummings voiced Darkwing, Christine Cavanaugh was Gosalyn and Terry McGovern played Launchpad.
Tad Stones, who created it, is consulting on the reboot and framed the recasting in terms that are more generous than most creators manage.
"This series places DW in the literary tradition of Robin Hood, Zorro, and Sherlock Holmes, heroes whose lore has been reinterpreted by multiple creators in multiple mediums," Stones said.
The DuckTales problem
Darkwing has already been rebooted once, sideways. The 2017 DuckTales made him a fictional character from an old superhero show, and then made Drake Mallard the president of his fan club who gets to become the real thing. Launchpad has been in every version of both shows. Nothing announced so far says whether this series shares that continuity or starts clean, and that is the one question the logline carefully does not answer.

No premiere date or episode count has been given, and Disney+ has not said whether the series is ongoing or limited. What is confirmed is the voice cast, the writers, and that the character's creator signed off on it.
