The Day Drinker trailer debuts a white-haired Johnny Depp — and a release date for his first big-studio movie since the trial
The first trailer for Day Drinker has arrived, and the headline attraction is Johnny Depp looking like a man who wandered off a tarot card: white-silver hair, a heavy beard, unsettlingly blue eyes, and the general energy of someone who knows how the movie ends.
He plays Kelly, a mysterious guest aboard a private yacht, where Madelyn Cline's bartender Lorna makes the classic thriller mistake of engaging the interesting stranger in conversation. Both promptly end up tangled with Penélope Cruz's criminal power player, Cara Lazaro.
The monologue is doing THE most
The teaser is built around Depp's narration, which I respectfully describe as "menace sommelier":
"My story? Perhaps it's a tale of revenge. Or perhaps something worse. What if all of this is a ghost story? Or maybe I'm just another day drinker?"
Elsewhere he offers "I've made a living out of misbehavior. I see no tangible reason to stop now," which is the kind of line you write knowing exactly who's delivering it. Around the voiceover: tarot cards, candles, an axe, guns, and a yacht that is absolutely not big enough for everyone's secrets.

The vibes, per the people who made it
Director Marc Webb has described shooting the Depp-Cline dynamic as feeling "like an act of seduction" — moody-thriller talk that tracks with every frame here. And Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson was not exactly underselling it either:
"Day Drinker combines a highly commercial concept with wildly outrageous twists and turns all set in an incredible world, and there is no better filmmaker than Marc or two more perfectly cast actors than Johnny and Penélope to bring that world to life."
The comeback math
This is the fourth Depp-Cruz team-up after Blow, On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express, and — more to the point — Depp's first lead in a major American studio movie since the 2022 trial turned his career into a cable-news genre. The post-verdict era so far ran through France (Jeanne du Barry) and the director's chair (Modi); this one comes with a wide Lionsgate release and a date: March 26, 2027. Shot in Tenerife, script by Zach Dean, drinks presumably comped.
