The Arrow's Stephen Amell was this close to becoming Johnson's partner in Fifty Shades of Grey... But then, he read the book.

Summary:

  • Stephen Amell became famous after portraying Oliver Queen in The Arrow, but he had another chance for a breakthrough.
  • Back in the day, the DC star was in the race to play Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation, but he left it.
  • According to Amell, his finalle reading the book and learning what it was about was the reason behind his dropping the gig.

Stephen Amell is the synonym of The Arrow. In DC's iconic TV show, the actor plays the lead role: his character, Oliver Queen, is a rich kid turned vigilante going under the name of Green Arrow. But admittedly, Amell was too close to getting a different kind of fame, too, for his comfort.

The Arrow Almost Became the Whip

Fifty Shades of Grey started off as a Twilight fanfiction but quickly became a standalone international bestseller, turning into a full-blown book trilogy. It wasn't long until a big-screen adaptation was ordered, and quite a scandalous movie series emerged.

For Dakota Johnson, her portrayal of Anastasia in Fifty Shades of Grey became a breakthrough despite the controversy surrounding the movie. It also launched her co-star, the Christian Grey actor Jamie Dornan, to international fame, but few people know the latter could have completely missed this gig altogether.

Stephen Amell, The Arrow star, was also in talks about playing Cristian Grey — until he wasn't.

Amell Didn't Care for Leather Masks

The DC TV show star had a solid chance of booking the lead part in Fifty Shades of Grey and didn't mind this opportunity at first. Apparently, that was only because Stephen Amell had no idea what he was trying to sign up for at the time. Getting his hands on the book was a rough awakening.

"Was on a flight yesterday evening back to LA with no movie, so I grabbed 50 Shades of Grey and burned through it. Ummm… I hope they get the movie made, and I’m sure someone will be excellent in it. That person will not be me," The Arrow star wrote on his Facebook.

While Amell never specified what exactly scared him off of Fifty Shades of Grey, he left the race for the part of Christian Grey... And honestly, it's not hard to assume what caught the actor's negative attention in that book as his "Ummm" speaks volumes.
