Demi Moore Is "Most Proud" of This 53%-Rated Military Drama for Which She Received a Razzie
This movie is about the struggle to find a place in a profession that has long disregarded women.
At the 2022 Oscars an incident occurred that made worldwide headlines: Will Smith took the stage and punched Chris Rock. The incident stemmed from a joke Rock made about the actor's wife's appearance – he compared her to Demi Moore in G.I. Jane.
Many viewers may not have understood the reference, but Moore herself has long acknowledged that she considers this movie her most challenging and important role.
G.I. Jane has a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Moore won a Golden Raspberry Award for her performance. However, years later, Moore calls G.I. Jane the work of which she is most proud.
Demi Moore Reveals 'G.I. Jane' Was the Most Challenging Movie in Her Career

In her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, Demi Moore said that the project was the hardest she had ever worked on, emotionally, physically, and mentally:
“I think very few people who aren't athletes or members of the military themselves can truly grasp what I went through to transform myself to star in GI Jane.
It is the film I am most proud of, because it was the hardest for me to make – emotionally, physically, and mentally – and I had to commit to the part as much as I imagined my character, Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil, was committed to becoming the first female Navy SEAL.”
Then Ridley Scott, known for his insistence on realism, offered the actress a chance to play against type. After experiencing a series of box office flops, Moore was determined to take on a serious role.
What Is 'G.I. Jane' About?
Lieutenant Jordan O'Neill serves in the US Navy. However, because of her gender, she has been unable to advance. She doesn't necessarily want to fight alongside men – she wants choice and equal opportunity.
She agrees to Senator Lillian's experiment and is sent to the Navy's most rigorous training program. This survival and destruction school is hell, where 60 percent of candidates fail.
Demi Moore Didn't Deserve That Razzie for Her Role as Jordan O'Neil

Critics panned G.I. Jane and Moore won a Golden Raspberry Award. Perhaps the movie's subject matter was too provocative, even by 2000s standards. Today, however, the actress's portrayal seems ahead of its time.
She played a woman who defied stereotypes, proving that endurance and fortitude are not dependent on gender. Moore made the selfless decision to shave her head for the role, hoping the movie would launch her career.
It didn't – G.I. Jane bombed at the box office, and critics failed to appreciate the actress's courage or the film's message. Years later, however, G.I. Jane became a symbol of Moore's strength and dedication to her profession.
