This isn’t just about the sci-fi genre though.

She might have had her chances going down a bit after Mikey Madison’s BAFTA win the other day, but Demi Moore is still the frontrunner for this year’s Best Actress statuette.

The actress received universal acclaim for her role in Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror The Substance and is now likely to become one of the few winners to recieve the award after starring in a horror movie, like Kathy Bates for Misery, Jodie Foster for The Silence of the Lambs or Nathalie Portman for Black Swan.

However, Moore’s very possible win won’t be another great moment for just the horror as a whole, but also for a very specific sci-fi subgenre which has been frequently misunderstood during the last couple of years.

Demi Moore’s Oscar Win Will Continue Absurdist Sci-fi Movies’ Successful Trend

If the actress in fact grabs that Oscar, it will become a win-win for both the horror and sci-fi genres, but in the latter’s case it will be an even bigger achievement.

In the past two years, the Academy voters have been extremely loyal to absurdist stories that starred two previous winners in the Best Actress category: in 2024, Emma Stone took the award for her portrayal of quirky Bella Baxter in Yorgos Latinos’ Poor Things, while in 2023 Michelle Yeoh was named the winner for the role of Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Demi Moore, in her turn, might continue the trend of rooting for weird, but compelling female characters thanks to her character Elizabeth Sparkle who, well, just sparkles in that scene where she watches her younger replacement Sue on TV while fiercely cooking and turning the kitchen into an utter mess.

The actress still holds her position as the most likely winner in the category, though something might have still shifted in the Oscars ’ predictions just a few days ago.

While everyone expected Moore to have another major win at the BAFTA ceremony after getting a Golden Globe back in January, the award ultimately went to Mikey Madison, bringing her upfront in the competition for the Oscar statuette.

Considering BAFTAs’ recent history of predicting winners in the Best Actress category, the Academy voters might leave Moore behind by giving another award to Madison. Both actresses are currently in similar positions, and the mystery will be solved at the upcoming Oscars ceremony that will take place on March 2.
