Despite mixed reviews, the movie became a massive hit in the box office and eventually spawned two more sequels.

For decades, Denzel Washington has remained one of Hollywood’s titans whose signature on any upcoming movie’s papers would definitely cause flows of viewers in theatres worldwide.

More recently, the actor could be seen in a 2024 sequel to Ridley Scott ’s 2000 hit historical drama Gladiator which many thought could have potentially brought him yet another Oscar nomination.

Despite not getting a nod from the Academy after all, Washington is doing just fine as his older movies keep finding new streaming homes. Naturally, this will soon be the case for the actor’s widely recognised action thriller which is set to arrive on Hulu in a couple of weeks.

The Equalizer Will Arrive on Hulu in April

Despite already being available for free on Tubi’s platform, the movie will also become a long-awaited arrival for Hulu subscription holders as The Equalizer has been confirmed to come to Hulu on April 1.

Released back in 2014, the movie stars Washington as Robert McCall, a retired DIA officer trying to build a new quiet life after years spent in a series of risky and chaotic missions, now working in a home improvement store.

Often unable to sleep, Robert is a frequent guest at an all-night diner where his reading hours are once disrupted by a teenage girl tormented by the Russian mafia.

Reluctant to get out of his already established retirement, Robert decides to bring the mobsters to justice, delivering a ruthless revenge on those who take advantage of the helpless.

Even With Mixed Reviews, The Equalizer Is a Worthy Start of the Franchise

Just like any other vigilante action thriller with a major star in the leading role, The Equalizer was expected to win big in the box office, and in fact did so, grossing $192 million against its estimated budget of around $70 million.

The critics’ reviews weren’t that unequivocal though, eventually leaving the movie with an average score of 61%, but still proving that it could potentially become a legit start of a new franchise.

In the following years, The Equalizer spawned two equally successful sequels, The Equalizer 2 and The Equalizer 3 released in 2018 and 2023 respectively.
