Desire in ‘The Sandman’: Who They Are & Who Plays Them in Netflix Series

One of The Sandman’s most controversial characters by nature, Desire could still easily be the entire show’s lead instead of Dream. Here’s everything to know about the character and the actor who stands behind.
A bit more than a week is left until Netflix’s TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” wraps its story up, and some fans aren’t ready yet to say goodbye to beloved characters.
Like any other series with a complex storyline, The Sandman has also introduced a number of polarizing characters that keep dividing the show’s fans.
Among those is Desire of the Endless family that keeps guard of some of the most important aspects of human life: desire, attraction, and love, that is.
However, it’s the controversial nature that, according to Desire’s actor, could have easily secured them a much better position in the series or even a spinoff.
Who Is Desire & Who Portrays Them in ‘The Sandman’?
In both the original comic book series and Netflix’s adaptation where they are portrayed by Mason Alexander Park, Desire is one of the Endless siblings who, despite most of their family members’ good intentions, is considered one of the main antagonists of the whole story.
They usually appear as a flirtatious and flamboyantly-looking person who, however, delves into manipulating and calculating each of their and others’ steps when there’s a possibility to get what they want.
Since Desire is primarily the embodiment of everything that people would ever want, the character is omnipresent and can go to whatever place they wish at any time.
Mason Alexander Park Says Desire Deserves Their Own Show
Considering how good of a villain they are in both the original source material and TV show, it’s easy to see why Desire would be a character compelling enough to get their own show just as easily.
Desire’s actor Mason Alexander Park shares such an opinion, saying that the character has in fact a lot of things to tell, and it might not all be utterly bad.
Ahead of the first season’s release back in 2022, Park revealed that even the original comics’ author Neil Gaiman was fond of Desire’s story and thought they might be a real hero after all.
“He told me that Desire is the hero of Desire's own story, and The Sandman could very easily be told from Desire's perspective and Desire's experience — and it would probably be a lot more interesting and have a lot more sex in it! I took that to heart”, Park said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back then.
