Destry Spielberg's Girl movie wrapped filming: Jason Isaacs heads a cast circling one very dead tennis instructor
A Spielberg just finished shooting a murder mystery in which the country-club class has a body on its hands — with a cast engineered to summon four separate fandoms at once.
Destry Allyn Spielberg — youngest of the Spielberg offspring, and yes, we'll get to it — has wrapped her second feature, the psychological crime-thriller Girl, after a summer shoot in Savannah, Georgia. Written by Will Danilow, the film opens with a tennis instructor found viciously murdered in "a summer beach town where wealth and status control everything," per the logline — leaving a local cop to dig through the dead man's last days, and his own compromised past, to untangle it. Rich people, rackets, a corpse: the genre currently keeping half of streaming alive, now with a Spielberg byline.
The four-quadrant suspect board
The casting strategy here is almost actuarial — one lead per demographic:
- Jason Isaacs, straight off The White Lotus and decades of Lucius Malfoy, supplying the prestige-TV-dad contingent; he's next in the horror-thriller Victorian Psycho.
- Maddie Ziegler, the Dance Moms alum turned legitimately good dramatic actress (The Fallout, My Old Ass) — who, in a tidy bit of family symmetry, already worked for a Spielberg on West Side Story. That one was Steven's.
- Luke Newton, imported directly from the Bridgerton fandom, in one of his most-watched post-Colin moves.
- Sofia Wylie, carrying the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series generation, with Netflix's The Body due this fall.
What we know from the ground
The production shot in and around Savannah from July 27 to August 21, closing streets and, per the local casting calls, recruiting extras that included "EMT extras and tennis doubles" — which tells you the murder weapon gets a workout and somebody's backhand needed a stunt performer. It's one of 26 productions currently filming in Georgia.
The nepo discourse will come for this movie regardless, so here's the actual record: Girl is Spielberg's sophomore feature, after the 2024 horror Please Don't Feed the Children, made with a fraction of the surname's usual budget. The last name opens doors; a dead tennis pro in a beach town has to hold the room on its own.
Girl is produced by Tetrad Studios, Crazy Legs Features, Valecroft, and 5 More Minutes Productions; no distributor or release date has been announced yet.
