There are so many things that are wrong with this movie…

Summary:

  • The Devil Wears Prada is one of the most popular Anne Hathaway movies.
  • Released in 2006, it was met with some criticism even back then.
  • Now that the film is on Netflix top chart, its main idea caused even more controversy among the viewers.

Who doesn’t love a good dramedy, right? There are plenty of movies in that mixed genre, and we really consider it being one of the best out there. It combines the serious issues but offers them to the viewers in a way they would never resist: under a comedic sauce.

One of the iconic movies of the genre is the popular 2006 Anna Hathaway and Meryl Streep film called The Devil Wears Prada. Upon its release, the movie grossed $326 million. There’s not a chance you didn’t see it, but if not, then hear us out.

The movie focuses on Andy Sachs, a naive and rather clumsy young girl who dreams of becoming a serious journalist. However, fate brings her to the Runway, the most glamorous magazine in New-York where despite all odds she becomes an assistant to the editor-in-chief.

Now a few words about this editor. Miranda Priestly, brilliantly played by Meryl Streep, is the queen of the fashion world and has a rather cold nature. She never says anything twice, she tolerates no one, and you can never speak up against her.

Again, despite the mere nature being against a tandem like Andy and Miranda, they become close to each other and andy learns a lot from her boss and turns into a fashion icon herself. Only to… ditch the amazing career and move on with her life with her dull boyfriend.

The movie recently got a release on Netflix and immediately climbed to the top 10 of the global chart. Which means that the viewers still love the movie and are ready to rewatch it again and again.

However, the new wave of popularity highlighted the existing problem of the movie, which is its terrible misogyny which comes from Nate. He was Andy's boyfriend, who, in fact, never showed a tiny bit of support to her.

And yes, we know that the story was supposed to highlight Andy becoming forgetting about him because of her work, but it never became the real case.

Instead, Nate ended up being the real villain of the movie after he never appreciated the growth and personality changes that Andy went through, which was actually a good thing for her.

While she was learning to be really happy with her new life, he was always trying to pick on the fact that she used to hate it all, literally demanding that she "change back" so he wouldn't feel like the left out loser.

18 years later, Nate’s character seems a lot more terrible than he was back then, and his attitude is unforgivable. And what makes it even worse is that at the end of the movie, it all goes as if he actually helped Andy turn back into her "real self," which is just not possible.

Even though Miranda is considered the villain of the film, she still got wholesome moments, while Nate was never given any redeeming qualities.
