'Dexter' Director Hints That 'Original Sin' Still Has a Chance to Return for a Second Season

The prequel to the cult series Dexter has had a complicated history. Dexter: Original Sin, which premiered in December 2024 to positive reviews, was unexpectedly canceled in August 2025 due to Paramount's financial issues.

However, one of the original show's directors recently gave fans a glimmer of hope when he revealed that the story of young Dexter Morgan might not be over yet – and fan support could be crucial.

Marcos Siega Revealed 'Dexter: Original Sin's Story Might Not Be Over

Marcos Siega, the director of Dexter and its spinoffs, New Blood and Resurrection, made an announcement on The Dark Passengers: A Dexter Podcast, hinting at the possibility of the project's return:

“I heard it might be coming back. You heard it here first.”

Siega emphasized that active fan support, such as the Change.org petition that has already received over 106 000 signatures, could convince the studio to reconsider the project.

Additionally, Siega expressed hope that another spinoff, the story of the serial killer Trinity starring John Lithgow, will be approved.

'Dexter: Original Sin' Was Warmly Welcomed by Both Critics and Viewers

The cancellation of Original Sin came as a surprise to many, especially given its successful launch and critical and audience acclaim. In fact, the premiere episode became the most-watched debut in Showtime history.

However, the decision to cancel was not due to creative failures, but rather the economic situation. After Skydance's acquisition, Paramount's new management decided to cut costs and focus on a limited number of projects.

The series takes viewers to Miami in the early 1990s, where we first meet a young Dexter Morgan, played by Patrick Gibson.

Fresh out of college, young Dexter begins an internship at the police department of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan. Aware of his son's dark tendencies, Harry tries to channel Dexter's thirst for violence in the right direction – investigating violent crimes.

However, Dexter forges his own path: he starts tracking down and punishing those he believes deserve to die.
