Picture the group chat reunion. Everyone RSVP'd yes. Katee Sackhoff. Giancarlo Esposito. Rosario Dawson. Bill Burr, obviously.

Everyone showed up to LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, the new 45-minute Disney+ special that lovingly roasts all three seasons of the show. Everyone except the man whose face is literally printed on the minifigure.

The Guest of Honor Sent a Stand-In

Din Djarin himself is now voiced by Gavin Hammon, a career voice actor whose résumé includes The Last of Us Part II, Red Dead Redemption II, and Kenny from the Walking Dead games, so the man knows his way around gravelly trauma. Pedro Pascal, meanwhile, is off being in approximately every movie currently in production, including two Avengers films, which is the kind of scheduling conflict most of us will never know.

To be clear about the sheer scale of this reunion he skipped:

  • Amy Sedaris is back as Peli Motto, herding everyone around like it's her job (it is);
  • Temuera Morrison, Ming-Na Wen, Timothy Olyphant, Emily Swallow, Nick Nolte — back, back, back, back, back;
  • Taika Waititi returned to voice a droid, and that man is busy;
  • even the deep-cut side characters got their original people.

The one guy behind the beskar helmet — the single most replaceable-by-design role in television history — is the one who got replaced. There's poetry in that.

In Fairness, the Helmet Does the Heavy Lifting

The special dropped September 2, the same day The Mandalorian and Grogu hit streaming, and it's a comedic brick-by-brick retelling rather than canon, so nobody needs to file a grievance. Also worth noting: Mark Hamill didn't voice LEGO Luke either — that's Eric Bauza — so Pascal is at least in prestigious no-show company.

And before anyone writes the "Pedro is done with Star Wars" thinkpiece: he isn't. Asked about the character's future, Pascal said, "I see a next chapter. I hope for a next chapter," which is about as far from a goodbye as it gets.

So the face is staying. The voice just took one (1) LEGO-shaped day off. This is the way, apparently.
