Yet there’s still no sign of how the events will turn out there.

Summary:

  • After almost ten years since its release, Zootopia is getting its highly anticipated sequel — and though the release date is quite far from now, some details have already sneaked in.
  • One of the movie’s main actors has recently shared an update about the sequel’s production on social media.
  • Taking into account the original film’s ending, it’s still not clear what the sequel will eventually concentrate on.

Almost ten years after its release, Zootopia’s story isn’t over yet — having become a $1B phenomenon with the highest ratings, the movie made it pretty clear that it needed to seize the moment.

Back in 2023, it became official that a sequel for one of Disney ’s biggest hits was coming to the screens pretty soon — and now seems like it’s been some time since the production started.

Right now Zootopia 2 is set to be released on November 26, 2025, but, despite being more than a year away from hitting the cinemas, the animated comedy is already in the works.

Around a week ago Ginnifer Goodwin, who voices rabbit Judy Hopps, shared two behind-the-scenes photos that seemingly feature her preparation for daily work on the movie.

The first photo shows Goodwin wearing a rabbit ear headband and a tiny Judy Hopps-shaped purse while also holding a Zootopia-coded cup; in the second picture there’s only a box full of small carrot cakes. The actress captioned the post as “This is how I go to work. I’m not kidding”.

Though it is now indeed confirmed that Zootopia 2 is already in the works, nothing about the upcoming sequel’s plot has been unveiled — and nothing can even become a ground for solid predictions.

Zootopia, which was released back in 2016, had a kind of happy ending with Judy Hopps and fox Nick Wilde becoming partners chasing criminals around the city and not a single detail in the last scenes would hint at something that both characters will have to deal with in the second movie.

Simultaneously, the very fact that literally nothing can be foreseen for Zootopia 2 may create a myriad of theories about where the sequel’s plot will eventually go — it can turn to Judy and Nick developing romantic feelings for each other, but can also leave them as friends and partners in their work dealing with the fantastic city’s most sinister personalities.

Anyhow, Zootopia’s world is so versatile that the storyline can cling to any other character without fearing for losing the audience’s attention — but we probably don’t get to expect more details coming in within the upcoming months.
