Do We Really Need a 'Rambo' Prequel? With 'Sisu’s' Director, I’m Starting to Think Yes

The prequel is in full swing, and its lead is already chosen.
I’m usually wary of endless prequels and reboots. The Rambo world may not be profound, but it’s iconic — a hero, a style, a place in pop culture. So when I heard about John Rambo, a Vietnam-era origin story, my first reaction was simple: why?
The project comes from Millennium Media, with filming planned for this autumn in Thailand and Lionsgate in talks to distribute. The script is by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (Black Adam), and directing is Jalmari Helander, whose Sisu delivered brutal, stylised action with a streak of dark humour.
Young Rambo will be played by Noah Centineo. Known for Netflix hits like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and The Recruit, he’s now stepping into full action mode. It’s a bold shift, especially with a Street Fighter role also ahead.
Sylvester Stallone isn’t involved, so this Rambo will stand entirely on its own. That could be a welcome fresh start — or a risky break from the character’s roots. For now, I’m intrigued but not yet sold.
