Does Peeta die in Catching Fire? Katniss swore to die for him — The Hunger Games had other plans
Catching Fire spends its entire second half daring you to think the answer is yes. It isn't — though the film gets closer to it than most sequels would dare with a lead.
Peeta Mellark, played by Josh Hutcherson, survives The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and every film after it. He is alive at the end of the Quarter Quell, alive at the end of both Mockingjay installments, and alive in the epilogue, living in District 12 with Katniss and their two children. What he doesn't do is walk out of that arena free.
The moment that makes people ask
Early in the Quarter Quell, Peeta walks into the arena's force field. His heart stops. Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) performs CPR and brings him back — the sequence is played long enough, and quietly enough, that a lot of first-time viewers register it as a death scene that gets undone.
It also sets up the arena's central rule. The force field is a dome, it can be hit, and it can be damaged. Beetee builds a plan around conducting lightning into it through wire. Katniss ends up firing an arrow into it at the moment of a strike, which blows the arena open.
Katniss's promise, and the promise she didn't know about
Going into the Quell, Katniss decides Peeta is the one who comes home, and she gets Haymitch to agree to it. What she doesn't know is that Haymitch had made the mirror-image promise to Peeta, and that the rebel victors in the arena — Finnick, Beetee, Johanna — were working to a different brief entirely. They were protecting Katniss, because the rebellion needed the Mockingjay, not the baker's son.
Every ally Peeta trusts in that arena is under instructions that don't prioritize him.
Who actually gets taken
When the arena breaks, a hovercraft lifts Katniss out unconscious. Peeta, Johanna Mason, and Enobaria are taken by a different one. The film closes on Katniss learning that District 12 has been destroyed and that Peeta is in Capitol custody.

That capture is the setup for the worst thing the series does to him. In Mockingjay, the Capitol hijacks Peeta using tracker jacker venom, rewriting his memories of Katniss into terror and hatred. He tries to strangle her the first time they're reunited after his rescue. His recovery takes the rest of the story, and it is never framed as complete.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire recap — the 2013 movie already showed a piece of Haymitch's Games
The numbers around the film
Catching Fire premiered in London on November 11, 2013, and opened in the United States on November 22. Francis Lawrence directed, taking over from Gary Ross. It grossed $865 million worldwide — the highest-grossing entry in the franchise and the fifth-biggest release of 2013.
Peeta's flatline is the only time in four films that the series lets one of its two leads register as clinically dead, and it resolves it inside ninety seconds.
For the record: Hutcherson is coming back. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Francis Lawrence's adaptation of the Haymitch novel, opens November 20, 2026, with Joseph Zada as young Haymitch, Ralph Fiennes as Snow, and both Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence reprising.
