The Studio’s raving success brought Seth Rogen’s past hit comedies back to the spotlight, and even the upcoming summer might not be a reason to skip the actor’s all-star Christmas movie (plus, a Franco there is a bonus).

While Seth Rogen’s comedy series The Studio is now taking a break from all the chaos it had to witness before and during the last episodes’ CinemaCon, the show isn’t coming back to Apple TV+ for at least another year — here’s where its leading actor’s long list of acting credits comes in handy.

Ten years before Rogen wrote, produced, directed and starred in one of the most successful TV series of this year, he was in another cringey holiday movie where he shared the screen with his frequent collaborator James Franco (not The Studio’s Dave, but still good!).

Dave Franco’s wild cameo in The Studio’s season 1 finale might not have come out of nowhere after all, with Seth Rogen once being just as wasted and goofy in a 2015 Christmas comedy movie The Night Before.

Also starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie, the film follows three childhood friends who reunite every Christmas Eve to look for the wildest party out there in New York City.

This time, however, things change radically as one of them is preparing to welcome his first child and the other two realise this might signal the end of an era.

As all of them intend to make this year’s Christmas Eve as unforgettable as it could ever be, the trio embarks on a mission to find the most luxurious party in town to get completely wasted there.

The Night Before also stars Lizzy Caplan, Mindy Kaling and Michael Shannon in supporting roles, as well as James Franco in a role of himself.

What Critics and Viewers Say About ‘The Night Before’

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, The Night Before keeps scores of 68% and 61% from critics and viewers
  • On IMDb, the movie is rated 6.4/10

Despite having received mostly mixed reviews, The Night Before still got some accolades and even was labeled as a potential holiday comedy classic.

“Funny and moving and destined to become a new, off-the-wall holiday classic”, The Last Thing I See’s Brent McKnight wrote.

“A finely tuned comedy machine, a film that not only works as a standalone contemporary project, but one that will come to be viewed in five, 10, 15 years as a snapshot of industry players at their prime, and a handy guide to before-they-were-famous icons”, Globe and Mail’s Barry Hertz said.

“This has become a must watch in my family every year during the holidays. Absolutely hilarious and unique”, a viewer wrote on Rotten Tomatoes’ website.

“This movie is a laugh-riot from start to finish. It has become my must-watch Christmas Eve film. As I get older (late 30s now) the closing 25 minutes hit hard; friendship and family are all that matter”, Michael S agreed.
