'Doomsday' Is Coming: Everything You Need to Know About the Upcoming 'Avengers' Movie
One thing is certain: Doomsday will be one of Marvel's most ambitious projects ever made.
The MCU is gearing up for one of the most monumental events in its history – Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit screens soon. It promises to not only unite dozens of superheroes, but also radically shift the balance of power across the multiverse.
The biggest news for fans is Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the franchise. The actor, who once brought Iron Man to life, is now stepping into a completely different role: Doctor Doom, a villain who threatens the existence of the entire multiverse.
When Will 'Avengers: Doomsday' Be Released?
The release date for the fifth Avengers movie has been postponed multiple times. Originally scheduled for May 2025, the release date was first pushed to May 2026 and then to the end of the year.
Ultimately, the premiere of Avengers: Doomsday is now scheduled for December 18, 2026.
The movie's runtime is rumored to be around 2 hours and 45 minutes. The finale of Doomsday will set the stage for the plot of the next movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, due out in 2027, which is expected to lead to a complete reboot of the cinematic universe.
What Happened to 'Avengers: The Kang Dynasty'?
Initially, the fifth Avengers movie was titled The Kang Dynasty and centered on a battle against Kang the Conqueror, a villain seeking to subjugate the entire multiverse.
The project was announced at Comic-Con in 2022 as part of Phase 6 of the MCU. The plan was for The Kang Dynasty to depict the conflict between superheroes and the antagonist who could traverse the multiverse across space and time.
Jonathan Majors was cast as Kang, and viewers were gradually introduced to the character, who had already appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Loki.
However, Majors was fired before filming began after an ex-girlfriend accused him of harassment and assault, and a court found him guilty of some of the charges. Consequently, Marvel had to rapidly overhaul the concept for the upcoming film.
Thus, Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., replaced the Conqueror, and the subtitle was changed to Doomsday.
What Will 'Avengers: Doomsday' Be About?
For now, it's known only that Doctor Doom intends to destroy the multiverse and that the heroes are trying to stop him. The movie's events pick up 14 months after the finale of Thunderbolts.
Almost everyone you know will battle Doom, including the Avengers led by Captain America, the New Avengers (formerly the Thunderbolts), the people of Wakanda, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men from parallel worlds.
Joe Russo has stated that any character from the Marvel Universe could appear in the new movie. According to reports, more than sixty actors could reprise their roles.
