Drogon Took to the Skies — But Is the Fire Truly Gone? Here's What Happened to the Last Dragon of 'Game of Thrones'

Could he still be alive, waiting for a new rider?
When, in the finale of Game of Thrones, Drogon flapped his wings one last time and lifted Daenerys’s lifeless body into the sky, viewers were left with a haunting question: where did he go? What happened to the majestic dragon for whom she was both mother and entire universe?
Even the Small Council didn’t provide an answer. King Bran Stark merely muttered, "Where is he now?" — and disappeared into his raven vision. Fans are convinced: Drogon carried his queen to Volantis — the place where the Red Priestess Kinvara serves. And though it’s only a theory, it has many supporters. After all, Red Priests know how to resurrect the dead — remember Beric Dondarrion.
But does Daenerys even need a second chance at life? Isn’t her story more complete because of the way it ended — not as a heroine, but as a tragic figure broken by power? Most likely, Drogon burned her body — as Targaryens do in their funeral tradition. This act is not mysticism, but farewell. And still, is the dragon truly gone?
The history of Westeros knows: after one rider dies, a dragon may accept another. Balerion and Vhagar each had three riders. And Drogon — he’s young, not even ten years old. He didn’t disappear. He waits. And maybe, in another land where magic still breathes, where the world hasn’t been choked by schemes and thrones, someone will rise to ride the fire once more.
Author George R.R. Martin loves historical rhymes. In Fire & Blood, there is a girl nicknamed Nettles: a bastard who tamed a wild dragon through feeding and sheer stubbornness. If HBO dares to make a ninth season, it’s possible such a Nettles could appear again. And not only as a new rider, but as a reminder: dragons may vanish, but the myth remains. Perhaps Daenerys is truly gone. But Drogon — has not spoken his final word.
