A tragic loss highlighting ongoing tensions captured in the film.

I was deeply saddened to learn about the recent death of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen, featured in the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land. The incident took place on the West Bank near Masafer Yatta, where she was reportedly shot during a confrontation.

Yuval Abraham, the Israeli co-director of the film, shared on his X page a video showing an Israeli settler firing at Palestinians. According to Abraham, Hathaleen was shot in the lungs and later died. The alleged shooter was arrested following the incident and is now under house arrest.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing tensions in the region. The documentary itself portrays the destruction of Masafer Yatta by Israeli forces and the complex realities faced by the local communities.

It’s also worth noting that another co-director, Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, was injured and detained during clashes earlier this year.

While I remain impartial on the wider conflict, this loss is a stark reminder of the human cost behind the headlines. The film No Other Land brings important stories to light, and sadly, the dangers faced by those telling them.
