A second stroke leaves Adam paralyzed and almost unable to speak. With Lee's help, he manages one word to his surviving son: "Timshel."

Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask across all seven episodes of Netflix's East of Eden, Zoe Kazan's adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel, which premiered on October 1, 2026. Adam is the good son, the good husband and the good father of the story, and the series ends by asking what that goodness cost him and what he can still give.

Full spoilers for the series follow.

How Adam gets to the last episode

Adam grows up under his father, Cyrus (Tracy Letts), who pushes him into the army and turns out to have lied about his own service. He marries Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh) over his brother Charles's objections, moves her to California's Salinas Valley and builds a farm for a family she never wanted. After the birth of their twins, she shoots him and leaves. He protects her anyway, telling the sheriff he shot himself.

He spends years barely functioning, until his neighbor Samuel Hamilton and his housekeeper Lee push him to name his sons. Lee ends up raising Cal and Aron alongside him. Abbott has called the Adam and Lee relationship his favorite in the show.

"It's just the most beautiful platonic romantic relationship," Abbott said of the pairing.

Adam eventually confronts Cathy, now running a brothel in Salinas, and comes away free of her. He inherits half of his brother Charles's fortune, then loses most of the family's money on a scheme to ship lettuce across the country in refrigerated rail cars.

The final episode

The last episode, "Timshel," takes Adam apart in stages:

  • The refusal — in 1917, Cal offers Adam $15,000 he made in a bean deal to cover the family's losses. Adam, who is helping with army recruitment in Salinas, rejects it as money made off the war.
  • The first stroke — after Cal, in retaliation, shows Aron their mother at the brothel, Aron leaves Stanford and enlists. When Adam hears, he suffers a stroke and recovers.
  • The second stroke — Aron is killed in the war. The news brings on a second stroke that leaves Adam paralyzed and nearly unresponsive.
  • The confession — Cal tells his father that he took Aron to see Cathy, and that he believes he caused his brother's death.

Adam's rejection of the money is the hinge of the finale. He means it as a stand on principle, and Cal takes it as one more rejection from a father who has dismissed his ideas before. That is what sets Cal off.

The last word

Lee pushes Cal to his father's bedside and asks them to reconcile. He brings their hands together, and Adam, barely able to move, forces out a single word: "Timshel."

The word comes from Lee's long study of God's warning to Cain in Genesis, and by Lee's reading it means "thou mayest," a choice. Cal has spent the whole series afraid that he inherited his mother's nature and that what happened to Aron proves it. His father's last word tells him that nothing about him is fixed.

In Steinbeck's novel, the scene plays almost the same way. Lee begs Adam to give Cal his blessing, Adam whispers "Timshel," and the book ends with him closing his eyes and sleeping.

Does Adam die?

Neither version shows it outright. The novel stops on Adam falling asleep, and the series ends on father and son together in the bed. Some outlets, including Netflix Life, count the finale as Adam's death. The show itself leaves it open.

What isn't open is the point of the scene. Adam spent his life being told he was the son meant to inherit something, and the one thing he leaves Cal is permission.
