His very first role may be the best of his career – and that's no exaggeration.

Edward Norton is an actor whose name is firmly associated with Fight Club and American History X, but his breakthrough performance was his very first one.

In 1996, the 26-year-old appeared in the legal drama Primal Fear and instantly became a star. Gregory Hoblit's movie, starring Richard Gere, has since been largely forgotten.

However, it is one of the most tense legal thrillers of the 1990s, and Norton's performance is a true masterclass in transformation, earning him an Oscar nomination.

What Is 'Primal Fear' About?

An archbishop was brutally murdered in Chicago. A 19-year-old choir member named Aaron is found next to the body, covered in blood. The evidence against him is overwhelming, and he admits to being at the crime scene but denies killing the archbishop.

Successful lawyer Martin agrees to defend him, not so much out of altruism, but rather to bolster his reputation and to have the opportunity to compete in court with his ex-wife, prosecutor Janet.

The deeper Martin delves into the case, the more his humanity awakens – he begins to believe in the young man's innocence.

In 'Primal Fear', Edward Norton's Performance Surpassed Even That of Richard Gere's

In 1996, Norton was a complete newcomer – his filmography consisted of minor roles in TV series. Then, suddenly, he landed a role in a major studio drama where he practically carried the entire plot.

Initially, Aaron is portrayed as a stuttering, intimidated teenager who has difficulty forming sentences and his lawyer treats him with pity and condescension.

But during the interrogation process, another personality emerges: Roy. He is a confident, aggressive, cynical sociopath willing to do anything to survive. Norton switches between these two personas with frightening ease.

Norton is so convincing that he overshadows Richard Gere, the leading actor. Scenes with Roy keep not only Martin, the lawyer, but also the viewer on edge.

'Primal Fear' Deserves Much More Attention Today

Nearly 30 years later, Primal Fear remains the gold standard for courtroom dramas. It has it all: tense courtroom dialogue, moral dilemmas, a lawyer more concerned with his career than justice, and an ending so unexpected that you'll want to watch it again.

Laura Linney's portrayal of the prosecutor and Martin's ex-wife adds another layer of conflict to the story. Their courtroom battles are a clash not only of professional ambitions, but also of personal grievances.

However, the main attraction of Primal Fear is Edward Norton. If you know the actor only from Fight Club or American History X, Primal Fear is the movie that will show you why he became a star in the first place.
