A fantasy project taking shape — slowly, and surprisingly.

A24 isn’t known for epic fantasy, but that may be changing. The studio is quietly moving forward with a film adaptation of Elden Ring, based on the best-selling video game. At the helm is writer-director Alex Garland, best known for Ex Machina and more recently Civil War. This could become A24’s most expensive project yet — even surpassing Marty Supreme, which reportedly had a $70 million budget.

Casting is already turning heads. Emmy-winner Ben Whishaw — best known as Q in the recent Bond films and the voice of Paddington —is reportedly in talks to take the lead. He’d star opposite Kit Connor, with whom he previously worked on Little Joe back in 2019. Not the obvious choice for a dark fantasy world — and that’s exactly what makes it intriguing.

Fans are cautiously optimistic.

On Reddit, Whobitmyname wrote: "Ben Whishaw joining this cast adds to what’s already shaping up to be something special." Another user, AtTheMovies704, added: "Cool to see if Kit and Ben become co-stars again."

There’s still no production date, trailer, or plot details — just a big world, a bold director, and now a quietly surprising lead. It’s early days, but Elden Ring is starting to look a lot more real. And for a game full of mystery, that feels like the right kind of beginning.
