Embassy release date on MGM Plus: Anna Kendrick is trapped in a Die Hard-style siege, and Sam Heughan plays her ex-fiancé
Mercenaries, a locked-down embassy, and an ex who happens to be SAS: MGM+ has bought itself a very specific kind of fun.
Let's start with the bad news: Embassy doesn't have a premiere date. MGM+ picked up the series on July 28, 2026, and its own list of upcoming originals still has the launch date down as TBA. The next MGM+ original on the calendar is Treasure Island, on October 11.
The rest of the world isn't much faster. Prime Video, which holds the rights in the UK, Ireland, Canada, France, Australia, and New Zealand, has pegged the show for 2027, according to The Scotsman. MGM+ is handling the US plus Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina. Filming in Cologne and London has already wrapped, so the episodes exist. Somebody just has to pick a Sunday.
So what is it?
It's a six-episode action thriller, and if you've seen Die Hard, you already know the bones of it. Armed mercenaries storm the US Embassy in London. Anna Kendrick plays Layla, an American diplomat who's stuck inside and has to choose between protecting the ambassador (J.K. Simmons) and following his orders to get a "high value asset" out of the building. Then there's the part that makes it a Sam Heughan show. As the plot widens into a conspiracy, Layla has to lean on someone she'd clearly rather not:
"...the reluctant help of her ex-fiancé, a British SAS soldier..."
— from the official Embassy synopsis
Heughan plays that ex, Connor Wright. So, to recap the Die Hard math:
- Building: an embassy instead of Nakatomi Plaza.
- The one person inside who can fix this: a diplomat, not a cop.
- The estranged partner: her ex-fiancé, instead of John McClane's estranged wife.
- The guy everybody's actually there to see: Heughan, a few months after Outlander wrapped for good.
This time the hostage-situation hero is the woman, and the guy shows up as backup.
Who made it
Embassy was created and written by Rom Lotan, whom Deadline described as a "fledgling writer," which means this is a first-timer handing scripts to an Oscar winner, an Oscar nominee, and the man who played Jamie Fraser for a decade. Directing duties are split between John Strickland, who directed Bodyguard and The Rig, and Christian Alvart (Pandorum, Case 39). Stuart Ford's AGC Television financed and produced it with Ascendant Fox and Turbine Studios, and first took it to buyers at Mipcom in October 2025.
It's Kendrick's first big TV lead since she made her directing debut with Woman of the Hour, and Simmons is pulling double duty at MGM+, which also has him in The Westies. MGM+'s global head, Michael Wright, summed up the pitch in the pickup announcement as "a high-octane six-part thriller with an exceptional cast and creative team." The rest of the cast includes Luke Treadaway, Katie McGrath, Lydia Leonard, James Murray, Alexander Karim, and Natalie Mendoza.
