Emilia Clarke’s Hardest Game of Thrones Scene Had Nothing to Do with Nudity
The on-set life of the actress was far from glamorous.
If there's one thing we've all learned about acting, it's that behind every perfect image there's a lot of hard work. When you see a celebrity on the red carpet in a beautiful gown, you rarely imagine that they are starving themselves with various diets or spending their evenings learning pages and pages of dialogue.
Sometimes it's even worse, and the things that actors have to go through for a movie can wreak havoc on their health in the worst possible way.
Emilia Clarke, for example, who got her breakthrough role as Daenerys Targaryen in her early 20s, faced many challenges on set. From shooting nude scenes to riding CGI dragons, her job was never the easiest.
Eating what's supposed to be a raw horse heart, however, has to beat all of them.
Even a thought of doing something like that would make the majority of people’s stomachs turn, but Clarke did her best. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean she was able to avoid puking. The actress got candid about her experience filming the scene of Khaleesi’s traditional Dothraki initiation in an interview with The Mirror:
“It was very helpful to be given something so truly disgusting to eat, so there wasn’t much acting required. They made the heart out of solidified jam but it tasted like bleach and raw pasta. I ate roughly 28 hearts throughout the days we filmed that scene. Fortunately, they gave me a spit bucket because I was vomiting in it quite often,” Clarke recalled.
You'd think that eating something so disgusting would make you want to do as few takes as possible, but it must have been just too hard for the star to keep a straight face. The good thing is that Emilia Clarke's suffering led to one of her character's most memorable scenes to date.
