Jacques Audiard’s scandalous movie secured 2 major wins at last night’s ceremony.

It’s been a tough time for Jacques Audiard’s controversial musical drama Emilia Pérez, though the Oscars ceremony might have gotten things even worse than before.

At the ceremony last Sunday, the movie took home two statuettes for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song, with Zoe Saldaña and Clément Ducol being awarded respectively.

Swirled with numerous scandals and controversies, Emilia Pérez has been long boycotted and eventually brought the Academy along, as the institution also got repeatedly criticised for giving the movie a whopping number of 13 nominations and then rewarding it with 2 wins.

However, while Zoe Saldaña remained safe from hateful speeches, her fellow nominees might have received even more of those after depriving a very deserving contender of the statuette.

Diane Warren Lost Best Original Song Award for the 16th Time

The ceremony was full of big surprises, though not all of them were pleasant ones. This year’s event continued a disheartening streak for Diane Warren, a songwriter and another Best Original Song nominee for “The Journey” written for a 2024 war drama The Six Triple Eight.

Nominated for the 16th time, Warren ultimately lost the long-promised award to Emilia Pérez’s Clément Ducol and Camille who took home the Oscar for the song titled “El Mal”.

An owner of the Academy Honorary Award that she received back in 2022, Warren has never gotten praise for any of her singular works, even though she’s remained the Academy’s constant nominee since 1987.

The composer now holds a record-breaking number of 16 Oscar nominations as her songs from movies like Armageddon, Music of the Heart, Pearl Harbor, Four Good Days and others never won the Best Original Song category after all.

Emilia Pérez Could’ve Done Better at the Oscars — But It Didn’t

For months ahead of the ceremony, the movie remained one of the frontrunners for at least some major awards, including for Best International Feature Film or even Best Picture. It was leading actress Karla Sofía Gascón’s tweet scandal that thwarted Emilia Pérez’s plans for a big win at the Oscars, yet the movie still walked away with 2 statuettes.

The Best International Feature Film award later on was given to Walter Sulles’ Brazilian political drama I’m Still Here, which came as a slight relief for those who cheered for Fernanda Torres in the Best Actress category.
