Emilia Pérez’s Oscar Chances Take a Hit Amid Karla Sofía Gascón Scandal
After several waves of harsh criticism from viewers, critics are turning against the scandalous musical too.
The Academy has always found its ways to cause some fuss among movie lovers, but this year’s drama is getting to a level that the prestigious award hasn’t seen in quite a long time.
The ceremony, which is set to take place on March 2, will finally reveal the winners among several strong contenders, and many have been long fearing that the Best Picture statuette might be given to Emilia Pérez, a movie that rose to fame mostly due to its controversial plot line and attempt to prove some audacious stereotypes to be true instead of debunking them.
However, the last several days made it clear that prayers coming from Emilia Pérez’s haters have definitely been heard, and now the movie has to face some major problems ahead of the upcoming ceremony.
Emilia Pérez Might Not Get Those Oscars After Allegations Against Karla Sofía Gascón
As if just dissing the movie wasn’t enough, some went further with their mission to bring down Emilia Pérez’s chances to win, and it seems like they did succeed. The whole situation around Jacques Audiard’s scandalous flick got even messier when Karla Sofía Gascón’s tweets from previous years resurfaced, causing an even bigger outburst of anger among those who watched the film.
As it turned out, Gascón, who has the leading role in Emilia Pérez, reflected on many controversial topics in her now-deleted account on X, posting hateful comments about Arabs and Black people, while also slamming her now co-star Selena Gomez back in the day and even criticising I’m Still Here’s actress and fellow Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres.
Having discovered some solid proof to use against Gascón, many users are now demanding that the latter, who made history as the first openly trans actress to receive an Oscar nomination, be taken off the competition; according to the Academy’s rules, she violated one of the main principles that prohibits one nominee to criticise another one.
Emilia Pérez’s Best Picture Win Chances Are Now Significantly Lower, Though It’s Still in Top-5
According to Gold Derby’s new take on the whole situation, Emilia Pérez is now less likely to receive the ceremony’s main prize as it dropped to the 4th place on the list of Best Picture nominees, now following Conclave, Anora and The Brutalist, with the latter having most chances to take the statuette.
Karla Sofía Gascón’s position on the Best Actress list hasn’t changed though, as the actress keeps holding the last place and thus, according to critics, has the least chances to win.
However, Emilia Pérez is still a frontrunner in many other categories, with Zoe Saldaña and the movie itself holding the first place on the Best Supporting Actress, the Best Song and the Best International Film lists.
