Emmy winners 2026: Widow's Bay sets a comedy record, The Pitt repeats — and Matthew Rhys makes history twice in one night
The 78th Emmys had one job: hand out trophies without breaking television. It failed, gloriously.
By the time Mariska Hargitay wrapped her "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" opening number, the night already belonged to a cursed little New England town that didn't exist a year ago.
The comedy category has a new landlord
Widow's Bay — Katie Dippold's horror-comedy about a town where the curse is real and so is the municipal dysfunction — walked into its freshman year with 19 nominations and walked out with 14 wins, the most any comedy has ever collected in a single year. Six of those came Monday night at the Peacock Theater, including the big one: Outstanding Comedy Series, pried straight out of the hands of reigning champ Hacks.
The show didn't just win. It swept:
- Both supporting comedy acting categories, with Stephen Root taking his trophy over sentimental favorite Harrison Ford
- Writing and directing, the latter a nod to Hiro Murai's tightrope act between "funny" and "genuinely unsettling"
- Lead Actor in a Comedy for Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis, a man governing a town that actively wants him dead.
Root, a character actor who has been quietly great in everything since before some nominees were born, used his moment to bow to the man he beat: "Thank you, sir, for all your many years of great, great, great acting," he told Ford from the stage. Harrison Ford losing an Emmy and receiving a standing compliment about it is the most dignified L of the season.

Matthew Rhys, certified menace
Rhys didn't stop at one. He also won Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me, which makes him:
- The first man ever to win two lead acting Emmys in the same night
- The first actor, full stop, to complete the lead-acting triple crown — drama (The Americans, 2018), comedy, and limited.
Backstage, he credited the whole Widow's Bay experiment to Murai nailing a tone he described as "a fragile tone to get and one that worried all of us." Worry no more, sir. Go home and explain to Keri Russell why the mantel needs reinforcing.
One actor, one night, two lead trophies. The Academy spent 78 years not letting this happen, and Rhys did it while playing a cursed small-town mayor.
Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh
The Pitt came in with a leading 25 nominations and left with its second consecutive Outstanding Drama Series win, plus a second straight Lead Actor statue for Noah Wyle, who told the room the repeat felt overwhelming. The man waited three decades after ER for this era; let him be overwhelmed.
The rest of the drama field split the leftovers. Pluribus took two primetime wins, including a first-ever Emmy for Rhea Seehorn — a sentence that should have existed since roughly 2017. And Jean Smart closed out Hacks with her fifth Lead Actress in a Comedy win, one for every single season the show has aired. Only Julia Louis-Dreyfus, with six wins across seven Veep seasons, has ever even approached that kind of batting average.
Jean Smart never lost. Five seasons, five Emmys. Deborah Vance would demand a recount anyway, on principle.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert took Outstanding Variety Series on its way out the door — one of six wins for its final season, which is a very pointed way to say goodbye.
