Tougen Anki opens with a dead father and doesn't slow down. Season 2 is five episodes in and still killing people mostly in flashbacks, which is its own kind of warning.

Studio Hibari's Tougen Anki finished its first season in December 2025 after 24 episodes covering the Kyoto and Nerima arcs, and season 2 picked up on October 2, 2026, with the Nikko Kegon Falls arc. The war between the Oni Agency and the Momotaro Agency has a body count in the hundreds by now, most of it nameless. The deaths that actually move the story are a much shorter list. Spoilers through season 2, episode 29.

Season 1: the Kyoto arc

  • Tsuyoshi Ichinose (episode 1): Shiki's foster father turns out to be a former high-ranking Momotaro agent who raised an Oni child anyway. When Samidare Momoya comes to kill Shiki, Tsuyoshi fights him with a cleaver made of black mist, takes a blade through the chest and still wounds Samidare once more to drive him off. He dies in Shiki's arms, telling him to become stronger than any Momotaro.
  • Mei's parents (episodes 5–6): Two Oni from the Kyoto base, killed by Tsubakiri Momomiya. Their bodies come back to the infirmary laced with his bacteria, and Tsubakiri reanimates them against their own side. Kyoya Oiranzaka puts down Mei's father. Shiki asks Mei to close her eyes and shoots her mother.
  • The Kyoto support unit (episodes 5–8): Tsubakiri's raid turns the base's dead into an army, and Shiki and his classmates spend an episode shooting their own reanimated comrades to cover the evacuation. A doctor at the base is killed by the Momotaro too.
  • Manaka Momobe (flashback, episode 11): Tsubakiri's old commander, a Momotaro who used to pray for the Oni he killed. He hesitated in front of an Oni child who looked like his daughter, and that child later went berserk and killed his wife and daughter. Manaka died from wounds shielding them, begged Tsubakiri to use his corpse to wipe out the Oni, and spent the Kyoto arc as Tsubakiri's puppet until Shiki's first Enki flames burned the body away.
  • Tsubakiri Momomiya (episode 11): Shiki's flames leave him crawling toward Manaka's burning corpse, and Naito Mudano ends it with his blood umbrella through the heart. Tsubakiri was 31 and left behind a newborn daughter.

Tsubakiri is the one that sticks. The show spends its first villain's last minutes on the man he loved, and then gives him a baby the audience never meets.

Tougen Anki's first big bad dies crawling toward a corpse he'd been using as a weapon. His last loyalty was to a dead man's grudge.

Season 1: the Nerima arc

The Nerima arc kills fewer people and makes each one count. Almost all of it traces back to one man, Shinya Momoiwa, a Momotaro commander who can see through the eyes of anyone who has swallowed his bacteria.

  • The Kanto Nuts gang (episode 19): Shinya's pet human gang, the one he used to kidnap Jin Kougasaki. To pit Shiki against his deputy Mikado, Shinya pays gang members to set fires, including at a hospital, and about ten members of the gang are burned alive on his orders. He kills another by hijacking his vision while he's driving.
  • Shinya Momoiwa (episode 22): He runs from Jin instead of fighting him, plants bombs under the floor of an abandoned building, and dies anyway when Jin slits his throat with his Blood Eclipse Release. In his last moments, he insists he can't die until he proves the people who looked down on him wrong.

Shinya's plan almost works. Mikado nearly kills Shiki over a fire Shiki never set. In the finale, Mikado visits Shinya's body to tell him the scheme has been exposed, then apologizes to Shiki in tears.

The arc also fills in Jin's backstory. In flashbacks, his father, Hayate Momoido, murdered Jin's mother, Asumi, and his sister, Hazuki. Back in Kyoto, Rokuro's fight with the Uglies runs through memories of Ruru, the girlfriend he lost to illness.

Season 2 so far

Five episodes into the Nikko Kegon Falls arc, no main character has died on screen yet. The deaths so far are flashbacks, and they explain the new season's two most volatile students:

  • Sumire Byoubugaura (episode 26): Homare's older sister, killed by their abusive father when she tried to kill him first. Watching Sumire die awakened Homare's Oni blood, the sisters' blood mixed on the floor, and Homare killed their father in a berserk state. It explains why her blood titan terrified her back in episode 3.
  • Tenma and Ikari's friends (episode 29): Ikari Yaoroshi lost his parents as a child, then found a new group of friends, including Tenma. A Momotaro raid killed them, and Tenma died saving him. The anime adds a scene of Ikari remembering it, right as he joins Hayate Todoroki's rogue Oni Brigade.

Episode 29 also shows Momotaro agents feeding Oni corpses into an extractor, and the Oni Brigade's next target is the Kegon Falls facility. Season 2 has spent a month on flashbacks and training. The facility raid is where it stops holding back.
