Everyone Forgot About This Michael Mann Gem – But It's Still the Best Hannibal Lecter Movie
Brian Cox created an unforgettable image of a cold-blooded killer.
August 15 marked the 40th anniversary of the release of Manhunter, the first movie to feature the character Hannibal Lecter.
Based on Thomas Harris' novel Red Dragon, Michael Mann's film was not popular at the time of its release but has since acquired cult status. A visually stunning and psychologically profound thriller, Manhunter remains the best adaptation of Hannibal Lecter's adventures.
What Is 'Manhunter' About?

Will Graham used to be a trusted FBI agent, but he resigned after Dr. Hannibal Lecktor was arrested. Now, he builds turtle pens on the beach but is distracted by a former colleague.
A serial killer nicknamed the Tooth Fairy is operating in the city, slaughtering entire families. The sophistication of the crimes and the pattern of the killings, which depend on the lunar cycle, indicate a ritualistic nature.
In order to understand the maniac's psychology, Graham must turn to Lecktor, who is imprisoned. Together, they enter a dangerous game where human lives are at stake.
'Manhunter' Is a Cinematic Masterpiece That Was Ahead of Its Time
Michael Mann approached his work with a diligence that would make the creators of modern true crime content envious: he spent three years writing the script, studying the work of behavioral scientists and FBI profilers, and corresponding with a convicted murderer.
Cinematographer Dante Spinotti developed a distinctive visual style: episodes were filmed at different frame rates, each group of characters was associated with a specific color, and Michel Rubini's soundtrack intensified the sense of unease.
Mann created distance from the characters by emphasizing visual expressiveness. Unlike the book, Graham dispenses with backstory, and the plot resembles a chronicle rather than a detective story.
The very first visit to the crime scene turns into a séance, and familiar reality gives way to surreal images – a William Blake painting and a tiger on an operating table.
While The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal are aesthetically pleasing to the point of theatricality, Manhunter, with its otherworldly efficiency, resembles a steel mechanism.
Brian Cox's Portrayal of Hannibal Lecter Is Quite Different From Anthony Hopkins'

Brian Cox played Lecktor, but he didn't achieve the same popularity as Anthony Hopkins, however, this wasn't because he was inferior. This Hannibal isn't a graceful manipulator – he's a carnivorous degenerate whose sophistication is chilling, not appealing.
William Petersen spent a lot of time with police officers to study the personality changes that such work causes. Graham is a man who can't escape the experience of hunting serial killers.
Tom Noonan, who played the Tooth Fairy, created a new persona for himself and didn't meet with the other actors before filming. This made his character come alive and be terrifying.
The legacy of Manhunter can be seen in David Fincher's Mindhunter, but most importantly, the movie still feels fresh today.
