Everything You Need to Know About 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale': Release Dare, Plot & More
The cult series revival is already on its way.
Rumors of Buffy's return have circulated for years, but they have only now become a reality. The revival of the popular 90s series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled New Sunnydale, is set to premiere on Hulu in 2026.
The project promises to combine nostalgia for the original with a fresh take on a world that still needs slayers. Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise the role that made her famous, and Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning director of Nomadland, will helm the project.
When Will 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale' Be Released?

The new series is scheduled to premiere in 2026. The exact date and the number of episodes in the first season have not yet been announced.
The project has been in development for several years. Sarah Michelle Gellar had long resisted returning until producer Gail Berman arranged a meeting with Chloé Zhao.
Zhao, a fan of the original show, convinced Gellar that the new project would honor the original's legacy.
What Will 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale' Be About?
The action takes place 25 years after the Season 7 finale. Once destroyed by dark forces, the town of Sunnydale has been rebuilt and is bustling with life once again. However, evil lurks, and a new Chosen One has arrived.
Sixteen-year-old Nova, a shy high school student who rarely interacts with her peers, discovers her power as a Slayer. She is assisted by an adult Buffy, who now acts as her mentor.
The creators promise that the series will retain the spirit of the original– a balance of teen drama, horror, and witty dialogue.
Who Is in the Cast of the Show?

Fifteen-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong, known for her roles in the series Anne with an E and the movie The Art of Racing in the Rain, will play the lead role of Nova. Sarah Michelle Gellar personally participated in the casting process and immediately approved Armstrong for the role.
Gellar will also return as an adult, experienced Slayer and mentor. The question of whether other original cast members will return remains open.
'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale's Director Is the Creator of 'Hamnet', Chloé Zhao
Perhaps the most unexpected and encouraging news is Chloé Zhao's involvement in the project.
The director, who won an Oscar for the minimalist drama Nomadland and directed one of 2025's most acclaimed films, Hamnet, admitted that she grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Zhao emphasizes that her project is a continuation, not a reboot. This means the Buffy universe will retain its history but be given a new lease on life.
