Everything You Need to Know About HBO's 'Lanterns': Release Date, Plot & More
Lanterns promises to be more than just another superhero show – it's an attempt to tell a mature, detective-driven thriller, almost a noir, set in the DC universe.
Lanterns, the latest project in the revamped DC Cinematic Universe, will be released soon. This detective story, which incorporates sci-fi and superhero elements, stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre.
Unlike classic adaptations, the creators are focusing on a down-to-earth detective story set on Earth, not grandiose space sci-fi.
When Will 'Lanterns' Be Released?
Lanterns is scheduled to premiere on August 16, 2026. The first episode will air on that date, and the first season will consist of eight episodes. The show will be available on HBO and HBO Max.
The release date has changed several times. The project was originally scheduled for an early 2026 premiere, but management later clarified that it would be released in late summer. The exact premiere date was revealed in April 2026.
What Will 'Lanterns' Be About?

The plot centers on a grim murder in rural Nebraska. Seasoned mentor Hal Jordan and rookie John Stewart lead the investigation. Jordan, a legendary Green Lantern Corps member nearing retirement, is tasked with training Stewart, a new recruit.
Their relationship follows the classic teacher-student model and develops into a partnership as they work together. Showrunner Chris Mundy describes his project as both a buddy cop series and a superhero show.
As the investigation progresses, the characters confront the crime itself and deeper questions about power, responsibility, and personal boundaries. The series will explore the work of these space cops as well as their personal lives, grounding the story and making it more psychologically compelling.
Who Are the Green Lanterns in the DC Universe?
Green Lanterns are intergalactic police officers who act on behalf of the Guardians of the Universe to maintain order in various sectors of space. Their primary tools are power rings that allow them to create any kind of energy construct, ranging from weapons to complex objects.
The rings grant their wearers virtually unlimited abilities, including flight, cosmic travel, and the ability to build powerful defenses. The source of the rings' power is the wearer's will – the stronger the will, the more powerful the abilities.
Each Lantern is assigned a specific sector, Earth is one of these sectors. Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and other characters have served in this sector at various times. Sinestro, a former Green Lantern who broke the Corps' principles and became its enemy, plays a significant role in the mythology.
Development of Lanterns began in 2019 when producer Greg Berlanti conceived the ambitious project for HBO Max. Initially, the concept included multiple timelines and additional characters.
However, following DC's restructuring and leadership changes, the project was reworked. A turning point came in 2022 when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios – Lanterns became part of this new strategy and was reimagined as a more intimate, detective-driven story.
